1968 455 dampner cover plate?

Hi

Went to turn over a 68 455 that had been sitting since 85ish and went to take socket to the dampner bolt and bam this plate was bolted to the pulleys.

Why did Oldsmobile use this and what was the design purpose as I have never seen this before.

Regards,

I can't answer your question, but can add that I've only seen this on 1968's 350's, 400 and 455's. And usually the area under the plate looks brand new!

Hi,

Yeah the inside of the pulley looks new, even has stenciled part number. Wish the rest of the engine looked that nice.

Regards,

I first saw one of those plates on a old Vista Cruiser in a salvage yard. My 71 Cutlass and 70 Vista Cruiser didn't have it.

Harv, I'll take that plate off your hands. Do you still have the bolts and spacers by any chance?

On those three groove pulleys, they tend to fill up with gravel and anything else that can hide in there and throw the engine out of balance.
