Hello All,

I have a 2000 Alero and I just installed a new Ignition Switch w/ Key.
The install went good, but now the car will not start. I'm guessing it has to to with security so it disconnected the negative from the battery for about 5 mins and tried again with no success.

My daily driver is a 1999 LeSabre. Last year it wouldn't start and the dealer changed out the ignition key/cylinder combination. Don't know if there was anyting else to it but the computer may need to be told there was a change made, other wise it is protecting the car thinking someone is trying to hot wire it, maybe? don't know....

 

if the dealer was "paying attention", he would have used a key/lock combo with the same resistance value pellet. you can measure this if you still have one of the old keys.

Disconnecting the battery on your car won't clear any memory. A 2000 Alero has an OBD 2 computer with Keep Alive Memory. When you replaced the ignition cylinder did you have a Chiltons, or Haynes manual as a reference?

 

Does your key have a pellet style Passlock resistor chip or is this the system where there's a magnet in the lock cylinder itself?

 

I just purchased a 2002 Alero for my daughter. The previous owner put a toggle switch in the system to bypass the security feature.

The security light is on but she runs like a charm.

 

i just did my neighbors car last year ,what a pain ! if i remember i did a search and found a forum that instructed me to solder a diode near the body control module. the security feature kills the fuel pump ,so leave the key on for 10 minutes and it will start. Hope this helps.

 

Turn ignition on, wait until security light stops flashing (will go out or come on solid, 10 minutes)
Turn key off.
Turn key on, wait again.....
Turn key off.
Turn key on, wait again.....

When the light shuts off you should be able to start the car at this point. It may not start righ away as passlock II cuts fuel as well as starter in that year.
