is it pretty common that people remove the correct 400 and drop 455s in?

Its not uncommon. However with true 442 they usually will keep the original 400 for posterity or to rebuild later. Yours was priced right for a play toy.

oh yea ill play with it the neighbors are not going to like it when i leave at 11:30 at night for my graveyard shift one week a month. i see yours is a 67 also and i would love to get a vinyl top they look so much better then paint. like i told my dad the paint wasnt what matters its the car i wanted so bad.

The only things we can tell for sure from your engine photo are that it is an Olds motor and apparently not original. The block and head casting numbers would be more informative. The later model alternator bracket from an A/C car is obviously not original.

Well, technically, the intake manifold, Holley carburetor, air cleaner, oil fill tube, MSD setup, engine paint, and alternator and bracket are not original, but we can't strictly say anything about the engine from that angle.

'69 H/O hood scoop on a '67.... which might be a 442 based on the grille bar.
It may even still have the "E" block 400 engine.

In my experience, you almost certainly have a PO-installed J-headed 455 out of a Big Car with AC. I see the '68+ PS pump.

btw, the term "cutty" rubs some folks the wrong way. Me, I don't care, I used to call mine a Cuddle-*** and the later ones a "broo-fam".

checked the numbers on the block and found out it has a 455 out of a 71 442 with g heads edelbrock performer intake and holly 4 barrel ( have not ran numbers on it ) yet and im sure it has a factory cam. im wanting to wake this engine up with a bigger cam does anyone know what will work with out machine work or is it not possible.

i dont really know for sure but i want to believe it did its a 396021, i dont think i would have just put any engine in a 5v car. but then again who knows how many people worked on it before me.
another thing you guys know where to go to get wiring a harness for the inside this one has been spliced too many times it looks like garbage under the dash.

Try M&H Wiring. that was where I got the under hood harnesses for my 442 when I replaced them and they were quality pieces. I got them through Year one, but it is cheaper to get them straight from M&H.

The block number for a 455 never changed. The only modification was going from 396021 F to FA.

Depending on what plant it came from can help you figure out what it was in. The stamp on the machined pad on the block below #1 spark plug will help with that.

The filler tube looks correct for a Toronado.

Sometimes the VIN can peg it as from a Toronado also.

By far the most likely scenario is "whatever engine was handy" which is usually the Big Car [88/ 98/ Toronado] with AC. Then they get stuck into the A-body project du jour, with the AC brackets on the engine but not the AC compressor... much like we see in your picture in post #2.

I would refrain from calling it a 442 engine until some shred of evidence supports that.

I got mine directly from M&H. Plug and play. Nice harness with correct wiring colors.

The alternator bracket is the same on my 73, I cut it down for my manifold..I thought it was for colonnade body's but could be wrong.
