I want to know what engine is in this car but i can't figure it out...any help?

The cowl tag isn't going to tell you anything about the engine. Neither is the VIN. Olds didn't put the engine code in the VIN until the 1972 model year. Also, your cowl tag shows 33687, which is normally a Cutlass designation, however for 1968 and 1969, many 442s came with 336xxx cowl tags and 344xxx VINs. This is well documented in factory literature. Now if the car really does have a 344878... VIN, then the engine SHOULD be one of five G-block 400 engines. If the car was a 68 H/O, then the engine would have been a 455.

The easiest way may be look at the block number behind the waterpump. What is it?

Your Block is a period correct (for 1968) 350. According to the breakout on Welcome 442.com http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofblk.htm...964%20-%201990
The 395558 2 was a 350 equipped in 68-70 model Olds.
As for your Cowl Tag, the ST 68 xxxxxLANxxxxxx means:
Style: 1968, 3(Olds) 3687 (Cutlas V-8 Holiday Coupe) made in LANsing MI, and the 6 digit code is the body tag Fisher used for tracking.

For the TRim code 947 and Paint code R-R, needs to be decoded by someone with a 68 manual. My 72 book won't decode it properly.
One R should be paint code and the other R should be roof color (I think).

 

R-R paint code is Scarlet (deep red) body with painted roof. May or may not have two-tone or vinyl top paint division mouldings though most solid-color cars didn't.

947 is Parchment (off-white) Strato-Bucket seats.

If engine is #s matching to car, it is NOT a 442. There's a machined pad behind the PS and alternator brackets on left front side of engine. The VIN derivative is stamped on it on all 1968-later engines. Last 6 digits on engine should match last 6 digits in the VIN.
