4-4-2 or 4-42?
Ive heard people say it both ways. Im pretty sure your suppose to say 4-4-2 but 4-42 does sound pretty cool. I usually say 4-4-2 if i know im talking to a hardcore olds guy but with anyone else 4-42 probably comes out.

Definitely "four four two." Originally came from 4 barrel carb, 4 speed transmission, and dual (2) exhaust. Not "four fourty two." But really its whatever makes ya happy. It's kinda like calling a firearm magazine a "clip" - the latter makes purists cringe as it's not technically correct, but most people do it. I suppose one could call a Cutlass a "Cutl-***" too.

Pontiac named their competitor car GTO because it means Go To Olds
BUT<> I accept your moniker. I've heard others about other brands that would be sensored if I put them here. CHEERS!

We always said it meant gas tires and oil- as in it used a lot of all three!
Yup- FOUR FOUR TWO. I've been known to correct people publicly when they say four forty two. And don't even come at me with that four hundred forty two cubic inch engine mess. I'll publicly embarrass you.

The GTO wasn't a "competitor" it was the first of it's kind, all the rest were after it. In these parts 4-4-2 meant car that rich daddy took you to the dealer to buy in his (fleet)wood, 9-8 or 225 , I mean deuce and a quarter. I was in my GTO/goat? and was told to "Go to Olds" so I got the Vista, who says you can't have both? If I ever go to furd I told my wife to shoot me... really.

A little friendly competition between GM brands is allowed, even here. Although I would think that Ford people would point to the Mustang in late '64 as the introduction to the pony car market segment. Muscle car? what does that mean, to six people it will mean six different things. 442, GTO, Charger, GTX, on and on and on. My friend says a true muscle car has three pedals. So, is the GTO a muscle car or a pony car? Is the 442 a muscle car or a pony car? What about the first overhead valve V8s introduced in 1949 by Oldsmobile, where they the first muscle cars? Then, what about the Ford flathead rule of supremacy in the 30s, and 40s, and some would say even into the 50s? To each our own. Heck, I can even allow the kids today with their "tuners" what else are they going to hot-rod and race? Give' em mom's old Civic and let 'em go!

I think there have been a few muscle cars in recent years. The Buick GN was definitely a muscle car. The early to mid 90s Chevy Impala was a muscle car. The recent Dodge Chargers are muscle cars (if they have the SRT-8 engine). Finally, the new Dodge Challenger is also a muscle car. IMHO...

Heck in the 60's, The factory made just about everything into a muscle car with their program options. full size pontiac 2DR post 421 , 4-speed standard steering, standard brakes, fast car. Plymouth Belvadere 2 door post 413 push button auto, the list goes on and on

Anyone ever hear of a Motion (performance) 68 Olds 442?

There were some pictures of a Motion 442 in some magazine a while back but I cannot remember which one.
I think the Cutlass police option stuff was there and available before the GTO hit the streets, but it conveniently answered Pontiac's challenge without a whole lot of fuss. I think a quick emblem tooling job was about all they had to make. That and contract with U.S. Royal for some of their new high performance (by 1964 standards anyway) redline tires.

For 1964 it was 4 speed, 4bbl, dual exh
For 1965 it was 400 engine, 4bbl, dual exh
For 1966 it was meaningless, since you could get a 3x2 bbl that year, or a 2bbl starting in 1968, or a 455 starting in 1970, or a 350 2bbl starting in 1972...

What did 442 mean in 1991? I bet that was the best 442 of all!

Apologies to all the Quad442 owners.

Well, that's not correct either, I'm afraid.

Like I said this topic is always good to go ...
thanks ...

Had that happen just yesterday. Drinking beer with a bunch of guys after golf (other sin of mine there are many.......) one of my friends asks how is your conversion going, had to tell the story, another guy chimes in " I use to race a 442 with a built 442, did it myself custom pistons and stuff beat everybody I raced, Hiccup, fart. All I could to keep my mouth shut. Everyone on the planet had the fastest car at one time or another.

Motion/Markowitz Olds
Here is the page from the August 1968 Issue of CARS Magazine. It is on the last three pages. Quite interesting that Joel Rosen (Motion)and Norm Flesch (Markowitz Olds) teamed up to build a few of these cars. MotionOlds.jpg
And for some additional info, when I worked for OLDS I used to call on this very same dealer! They remembered the package well.

Handy dandy parking lot. Good for taking car pictures!
I had seen that Motion-Markowitz ad years ago and had forgot they did some Toronados. Wonder how they did headers and high-rise intake on those?!
How many Motion/Oldsmobiles have survived? My guess is very few of the few built.

Well, when people say Four Fourty Two, it's probably because they think the car has a 442 ci engine. People that don't know would think that.
The correct term is 4-4-2. The def has been discussed already
