Two different 404847 water pump styles???

Does anybody know the reason for (or noticed) the two different styles of 404847 water pumps for '70 with HD cooling???

The first style had a julian date code of "54", "D1", and "404847" casted horizontally.

Also has two weep holes, one at the top of the snout (uncommon) and another at the bottom side of the snout (normal).

The second type has a julian date "343", code "CFD", and "404847" casted vertically.

It has only one weep hole and it is in the normal place under the snout.

in 1970 nasa also used those engines in the space program, and in zero gravity the weep holes had to go in the top

I don't have an answer for you, but it's not unusual to find the same part number cast by two different foundries, or cast with a different appearance in different years. I believe that CFD stands for Central Forging Division (of GM); the fact the other pump doesn't have "CFD" might be an indication it's from elsewhere.

I'm used to seeing the second pump (with text cast vertically) for 1970, but I have nothing to back that up with.

Finally, remember that 404847 is the casting number of the body of the pump. It is not necessarily the pump's part number. They could assemble a pump using that body but with different impellers, flanges, nipples, etc. to make different part numbers. But I don't know if that was actually done with the 404847 casting.

Mine looks just like the secoond one, interestingly it only has a D and then a Y and an A on the bottom, even weirder is that the Julian date is 8 and my car was built in November so mine is either a leftover 69 or a replacement from January 70
