Question '70 442 Sports Steering Wheel Horn button color

I've looked at a lot of photos of '70 442 interiors over the years but I'm trying to confirm if the horn button on cars with the sports steering wheel were color coded to the interior or where they black ???? Similar question with the 8 track housing. I believe the 8 track housing was black and many people have painted them but I'm sensing that the horn button's were possibly color coded. Can anyone with good knowledge confirm ?? I grabbed this photo of a gold interior like mine and another of a NOS horn button from the web as examples only.
Thanks in advance.

The horn caps in 1970 came in different colors. Here's a screenshot from the Assembly Manual.
I believe the caps were only offered in black in 71 and 72.

Ahh. thanks so much for that. My parts book didn't list the different colors (as its a '74) and I completely overlooked the Assembly Manual. I'll now start hunting for a gold one before I consider dyeing the black one I have gold. Cheers Rohan

70 and 71 had color-coordinated hubs and caps. In 1972 the hubs were steering column color, but the caps were all black.

an exception of color-coordination n 70 and 71 would be if the vehicle was pearl or white interior ; as i have never seen one in white, - of course the dash was also black.

Correct - the steering columns are always black in pearl interior cars like my '70 SX convertible, so that problem sorts itself out. ; )

Thanks Terry, Think I'll be attempting to paint my black horn button as I'm sure finding a good original gold one will be quite a challenge. Will be painting the hood-lacing with special gold vinyl paint this week so subject to how it comes up I'll probably give the horn button a go too. That way it should match up to my dash. Cheers Rohan

I would say that the 8-track housings would bethe same colour as the dash; black would look like an add-on. The 8-track unit I salvaged from a willow green Delta 88 interior is also willow green.

Great info Terry. So a 1971 Siena Interior would have a Siena Hub and Siena cap? Where can I find info on the 72 Hubs being steering column color?

For your 1970 W-30, your sport horn button would be gold. Olds used a unique part number for each colored button.

For the 8 track player, the front cushion is going to be a different shade of gold than the plastic housing gold. There should be a contrast there. Similar to my blue interior, you'll likely end up with a dozen shades of gold paint / dye.

Yes it seems the horn button should be gold so I'll probably end up having to paint/dye mine given it will be near impossible to find a good gold one in decent condition. After getting access to a '70 Parts Book it confirms the gold horn button but neither the '70 or '74 Parts Books or the '70 Assembly Manual list different color options for the 8 track pad so this still seems to be a bit of a mystery. Here's a photo of my dash as I bought the car - the dash had been repainted (in a lighter gold) so its possible that the pad on the 8 track housing may not be the original. All the original 8 track pads seem to bleed and turn sticky so perhaps mine has been replaced at some point.

Look in your 70 assembly manual, section 0 page 43. There is information on that page about the different colors used on interior items. See column 1 stereo case and stereo case pad.

Thanks Don. That's a good piece of detective work. I've read over those pages before but obviously not that piece of detail. Looks like I'll need to get the vinyl paint primer & gold out this weekend to do these parts too. I've found it a struggle to get good photos of original interiors that weren't black interiors and the only ones I've seen like this one below were showing black cases but it's looking like they were probably transplants from another car or maybe dealer installed. Appreciate the lead on Assembly Manual details. Cheers Rohan

Painted result on horn button

Well I painted the black horn button I had with the specially mixed vinyl paint that I had matched up for my wind-lace and its come up pretty well IMO. Getting the gold mix right was a bit tricky but worth it I think - in these pics it changes a lot from the 1st wet coat to the dried 2nd coat but its pretty close to the original dash color now. Thanks for everyones feedback and coming up next will be the 8 track pad & housing. Cheers Rohan

Got the 1st coat of paint on to the 8 track housing today but had a few dramas with adhesion initially. A good scuff and clean with denatured alcohol fixed it in the end. Will post a final pic once I fit the 8 track to the car
.

Wow, that looks nice. After looking thru this thread I am still confused. In my case I have a 71 Cutlass Supreme convertible. I put a black sport wheel on back in the nineties. Are 1971 wheels horn buttons supposed to be interior color or black? My car has a blue interior with blue dash and bench seat. Thanks, Greg.

Luckily matching up the dash, console, seat backs & skirts have been relatively easy because those parts have sections that have been hidden & uneffected by light & UV and as you say it ends up being a dozen shades of gold. Surprisingly they all seem to go reasonably well together so far but the match up between 8 track housing cushion & console will be interesting .
