1970 442 convertible stripes
#2
Double pinstripe on each side (thin one on top and a slightly wider one below). Basically placed similar to the W30 stripes (ie....down the middle of the car and over each wheelwell.
The dimensions/layout are in the '70 Assembly Manuals. You should get one so you will be able to accurately place the stripes, figure out the sizes, termination points, etc.

droptopron and Greg Rogers,
Thanks. The correct stripes on these are really tricky. The Assembly Manual gives you the dimensions of the stripes themselves but does not give you the alignment on the body except over the wheel arches. We have all probably seen high dollar paint jobs with the stripes in the wrong places. It absolutely ruins the look.. The 70 model year is especially tricky because the stripes look like they follow the body contour. They absolutely do not, at least on the front fender and rear quarter.
If you like the look of mine, I'd be happy to share the dimensions we used. They came directly off an original paint, original stripe hardtop I own.

I appreciate the offer but mine is already at the shop so fingers crossed it comes out well. I gave the painter the pages from the assembly manual and printed a bunch of pics of what are supposed to be original unrestored cars. Couple attached for reference. You can see how the fender from the front bumper to the wheel well doesn't match the contour of the fender.

I used Rich at Absolute Autobody. 90 Dale Street in West Babylon. Very happy with the service. Pretty much a one man shop only doing a couple cars at a time. Very reasonable and got the car done quickly. He's not a big insurance shop so the classics don't get pushed into the corner until they have extra time.
PM me for more details.

droptopron,
If you used the pics you posted for your painter, they aren't even close to correct. The 71 & 72 stripes were much higher on the body than the 70. See the pic I posted. The orange fender is an original paint/stripe 71 fender on the blue car, an original paint/stripe 70. As you can see, there is a big difference. Obviously it's your car so do it the way you want it

One other tip - the stripes did not run flat across either the front fender or the rear quarter. They actually parallel the openings for the side marker lights. In other words, they run at a slight angle the does not correspond with the contour on the side of the fender. It looks a little odd when you are laying them out but it is correct..

My painter has the car now and getting ready for side/trunk stripes. Any help here on getting these right beyond what the assembly manual has would be fantastic. Thank you! Mine is also '70 non-W-30 442 convertible.

I was happy with it. He did a nice job. The car broke down in a shopping center parking lot the day I got it back. I had to get it flat bedded. That kinda put a damper on it. I got it back in time to stick it in the garage with the cover on it & wait fro spring.

No - on a '70 442 the "corners"/intersections were sharp....no curve or "transition". W cars? - Yes, they had curved "corners".
Here's one thread on a member's original paint '70 442. Scroll down to posting #6.

I haven't seen the car with the finished stripes on it yet, but hope to in the next couple of days. If he can't get them done by tomorrow then it will be after NY. Owned the 442 for over a decade, so a couple weeks to see stripes isn't killing me. Mark does great work, so feel pretty good about outcome. Here's the hood he striped for me.
