1970 trim tag paint code
My trim tag reads
tr 979 926 99568 A pnt
on the second line from the top.The car is Sebring yellow now and all old paint evidence is yellow. The complete tag reads
st 70 34467 e 272 bdy
tr 979 926 99568 A pnt
10b a31
Can somebody please tell me what color it should be? I bought it with the understanding that it was a color change, I would just like to know from what.
Thanks for your time

That's an unusual trim tag. This is what I show:
* 70 = model year
* 34467 = Olds (3) 4-4-2 (44) convertible (67)
* E = weird. An "E" in the VIN would mean the car was assembled at the Linden, NJ plant. On the trim tag, though, it normally reads "BL".
* 272 = also weird. This is the body number. 272 would mean this was the 272nd convertible "A" body assembled at the Linden plant for model year 1970. That would also mean to me that this is an earlier production car. Usually, though, this number would show as 000272.
* 979 = interior color and seating arrangement, which, in my book, says saddle-colored bucket seats.
* 926 = weird. That code is not listed in my book for 1970. Unless it is some sort of special order from the factory, I don't know what else it could be.
* 99568 = weird (special order again?). This code is supposed to indicate the lower body color and it doesn't show in my book. All the paint codes in my book are two numbers. The color code for sebring yellow is 51, for nugget gold 53, for galleon gold 55, and for burnished gold 58.
* A = convertible top color which is white.
* 10B = time build code. 10 is October and B is the second week in that month. This car was built in the second week of October 1969, so it is a fairly early production car.
* A31 = option code for power windows.
I wish I could help you more on this one but it's got me puzzled; in particular, the "926" and the "99568" codes. There are others out there who know a lot more than I do about these things; I hope they chime in, too! Best Regards, Randy C.

He has a good pic posted there, too.
Not coming up with anything more than you are!
Very odd, indeed!

Trim tag
My 70 442 tag appears to be the same as Mugzilla's tag. It is also a Lansing car. As Mr. Mugzilla also pointed out, the rivet holes in my tag are also filled in. I do have an original dealers sales brochure, it shows that "sebring yellow" was a special order color, for intermediates only. Just thought I'd add what I know to this mystery.

Mugzilla posted 2 pics. First was an enlargement of the the original poster's tag (making it easier for us to see), the 2'nd one he identifies as a '70 trim tag to illustrate the rivet holes being filled in. He didn't say that was his trim tag.
So if you are saying that yours is like that 2nd pic, I get it now.
That 2nd pic is "normal" and what I'd expect to see!

I guess we got it figured out. I live in North Central Florida and go
to quite a few local shows. If any of you are ever up this way I'd be happy to let you know of any shows, or just meet and check out our Olds.
I belonged to the Olds Club of Florida, but they never come this far
North.

I was looking for information on a few numbers on my cowl tag and came across this discussion. I have a 1970 Cutlass SX convertible with some of the same numbers:
ST 70 34267 E 441
TR 970 926 99568 B
09C A31
I knew what all of the numbers were except the "926 99668". My Cutlass is also a Linden car that was Sebring Yellow. I was the original owner (and am also the 5th owner as of a couple of weeks ago) so I know the original color. Seems the Linden cars with Sebring Yellow must have had "926 99668" on the cowl tag.

It appears Toldeobend may be on to something. From a Chevelle site, it appears 926 is a dupont code for non-metallic yellow and the mixing code right after it. Lansing used a "- -" if I recall correctly for special paint, such as on the Rallye 350's I've seen. Apparently Chevelles used a similar deal.
Anyhoo, here's the link to the site I looked at. Take it for what it's worth.

Regarding the paint code on the Fisher Body tag:
While many Olds with the "special order colors" received the double dashes, it's not uncommon for the tag to show the "WA code" instead. I don't know if this was a function of which Fisher Body plant the car was built at, the phase of the moon, or something else. This same code will also be found on the build sheet.

I've seen a white car with "--". Someone once told me the dashes were dependent on whether the car was delivered from the sales pool or ordered by the buyer - dunno if that's true. Anyone see an extra-cost color car with the actual two-digit paint code?
#22
Rallye 350s had "--" whether you ordered or bought off the lot and they all came from Lansing. I wonder if that was because they used the "ZZ" for the paint on the 68 H/Os. I'm thinking it was a build-plant thing as to use the dashes or the paint code.
#23
The 68 H/O used a "Z Z" paint code because the letter Z was the regular paint code for Peruvian Silver in 1968. The first Z meant lower body color and the second Z meant upper body color. The "- -" code in 1970 could have indicated any one of four special order colors. Sebring Yellow was only one of those.

my body tag has "WA 3893"
which is also on the build sheet along with
"Y62 sp paint chg"
car is Linden, N.J. build, early February 1970
it is very interesting to see the different variations in how these paint codes were presented. "--" "99568" "wa3893".
it seems to me that there are a few ways for a car to have the correct special order color documented.
