Need to upgrade exhaust system 70 442. Looking for advice
Looking to get some feedback on some exhaust upgrades . Currently have mild system on 70 455 . W/Z manifold . Want to get something mid aggressive and up it to 2-1/2 pipes . Don't really want to go to headers . Just want to see what everyone is running with similar 442s . Feedback appreciated. Thanks
There must be a bazillion "which muffler should I get" threads on here. Every single one has the Flowmaster proponents against the Dynomax proponents, with a handful of Magaflow and others thrown in for good measure. Bottom line is that muffler sound is VERY subjective. I personally hate Flowmasters, especially since not only are they obnoxiously loud and droning but somehow always manage to finish among the most restrictive mufflers in flow tests. Walker Dynomax Turbos have a nice throaty sound (to MY ears, anyway). 14" are louder than 21", so pick accordingly.

X2, on my bone stock 350 70 Cutlass convertible mine starts from a Thornton exhaust manifolds through 2 1/4" pipes to the end.
No arguments with the above comments regarding mufflers. It's difficult to really research what sounds good unless you know what somebody's running and can actually experience it first hand (NOT youtube).
I installed a flowmaster 2.5" system on my '69 442 last year. They make a drop in kit with an H-pipe and straight tailpipes that will allow you to use factory trumpets (note the 2.5" diameter will require 2.5" trumpets - available from Pypes). It's a 409ss system and I am very satisfied with it.
The kit does not include downpipes so I purchased 2.5" 409ss downpipes from Pypes. These required minor trimming to mate with the Flowmaster kit. Everything fits great and sounds good (at least to me). I went with the Flowmaster mufflers and they are definitely louder than the turbo mufflers that were on the car.
Ignoring the muffler issue, I would highly recommend this exhaust kit to anyone looking for an upgrade over stock.
I'm running 2.5' pipes with flowmaster 40's coming off of flowtech headers. I have a 455 in my '69 with 3.42's. Has a nice idle and sounds great when you punch it. Cruising speed is nice and mellow. I also put on doug's electric cutouts for when I want to raise hell.
