Are Wings Worth It ..?

As for looks, I think the wings are spot on...

I would think they would slow you down at the speeds my car travels, 15+ sec@90+mph ...

Are they functional at speeds under 150 mph ..?

Should I put them on my beastie ..?

If I had your car I'd leave it alone. That being said I really like the look of the wing that's why I threw one on mine. But it's not like you couldn't just fill the holes in later if the wing were removed. As for down force under 150 not much I would say and drag IMO not much. Did this help?.

As long as it does not look like this I think you will be fine.

I think they look exceptional on the fastback models, but not the Supremes or convertibles. I'm not sure, but I don't think they were offered on Supreme models from the factory.

Are they functional? Don't know.

Should you put one on? Only if you want to. They're relatively easy to get and not all that expensive. You will have to pierce the deck lid in exactly the right places to center it, and once it's been added there's no way of cheaply fixing the deck short of replacing it for an original look. Your call. I'm putting one on mine, but then again I'm not planning on it being a daily driver or a track car.

I had one on my 1971 Supreme with a ram air hood up front and I liked the look. When I had first put it together I didn't know that it wasn't correct! In the early 1980's I was turning wrenches on $100 Oldsmobiles for a while before I figured out the different models. I feel they're a nice touch, like a ram air hood or rally wheels, they just really add to the appearance. Although if a wing is going to stand above the roof it better be on a daytona or superbird!

You know you're a redneck when....your spoiler doubles as a high diving board at yer second cuzzin Emily and First cuzzin Franks wedding down at the pond. (fictitious names to protect the innocent...)

On a '70 the wing seems to balance that most snorkley hood ...

I have never been a fan of spoilers. If you decide to have one put on your car make sure it is a factory reproduction and make sure it is professionally installed, or have a buddy over that knows exactly how to install it. It would be a shame to put it on and mess up your car because you drilled a hole a few inches out of position.

I don't care for spoilers myself but know that many people like them. They look good on some cars but it has been so overused in the last ten years or so. Every little Hyundai, Toyota, and even many domestics have one now that it kind of cheapens the whole idea, even for the cars that originally had them.

I hear ya

My teenage boys seem to like the wings but I'm on the fence on this one. I'm thinking about finding another trunk lid and wing so I have 2 trunk lids, and paint them both so I have the option.

Neat idea! Gives you flexibility. One week it could be the boys car, next week yours.

Don't forget that if you buy another rear deck, the fastback and the Supreme/vert deck lids are apparently different. You need one from a fastback to fit right. Don't know what the difference is, but I suspect it has something to do with how it matches the rear quarter panel fitment.

Those wings for the 70-72's are great looking wings and the work. They are downsized Cesna wings. My car's body style was used in NASCAR from 1977 to 1981. Here is the wing they used. I also have another trunk just incase I change my mind in years to come.

I am the pro that installs things ...

The '70 has an inverted wing ...

The '76 has a spoiler ...

I do alot of work on my Olds also; however, this would be something I wouldn't do myself. If you have installed a wing, spoiler (or whatever it is called) before then great. If not, then definitely make sure you have a friend over that can help you with measurements and drilling. Plus, it is always good to turn a wrench with a buddy.

I've always thought I'd like to have a bar and in the center I'd have someone work on classic cars...

It would be surrounded by a rail with stools so patrons can drink and watch the work ...

just like my old shop ...

I read that at 85 mph they produce 15 lbs of down draft. Not sure if that's the word I'm looking for, but you get the idea.

That might help plant the tires on the 2/3 shift...

That is an appreciable amount of down force (?) at an attainable speed so I would say yes ...

That is exactly what I am doing for my W-31. It did not have one originally so I I will have one for Olds shows and the wing when I want it other times! I have one on my 72 and think it would would look naked without it!!
