In this case specifically a 1967 442. Did all W30's have their battery mounted in the trunk? If yes, was the battery mounted on the passenger side or driver side of the trunk?

yes, both 66 and 67 had the battery up on the "shelf" over the rear axle, passenger side.

This may sound like a stupid question but what is the "shelf" in the trunk?

The flat spot in the trunk floor directly above the rear axle.

Right above it is the package tray where it is illegal to transport packages.
