Underhood insulation

I have a 1966 442, my hood insulation has been a real pain in the @&$. My air filter rides very high and is always covered with hood insulation material. I’ve already replaced it (new insulation ) and used spray adhesive but that doesn’t stop the insulation material from shedding. What is the purpose of the insulation? Sound deadening? Perhaps reduce heat on the hood surface to protect the finish? I’m wondering do I really need it? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yeah, I reversed mine on my '72 (turned it over). I agree, it's a mess.

It isn't particularly needed. You can remove it and it won't damage anything.

FWIW, I cut new hood insulation for my 71 98, but for some reason I took it off. I think I wasn't happy with the material I used (just sheet insulation from the hardware store) and wanted to get some insulation from Summit or Jegs.
