Trunk molding

Can the trunk molding from a 1966 442 be restored? There is some pitting on the shiny part and the black part.

More pitting = more $$ to restore. In the black area the pits can be hidden and filled to a degree. Pits in the chrome potmetal are the problem.

What is bothering me is that the shiny part does not look like chrome or pot metal, it looks like a polished stainless steel. Am I correct?

Stainless does not pit....the whole piece is potmetal that was chromed. Post some pictures.

No. It's one piece.

Pits in the "wrinkle" part of the trim are problematic. I have the same problem on my 66. The plater will grind away all the texture in that part of the trim piece. I plan to use wrinkle black paint to restore the texture on mine.

I am not very knowledgeable about computers and do not know how to post a picture. I did take two pictures with my IPhone and sent them to myself as emails. Would anyone who is willing to look at the pictures send me their email address? This is the only way I know to do it. Thanks

Looks like a lot of pitting in black area and on the chrome area some decent pitting. My opinion is to look for a nicer one. You can expect to pay 200 to 300 dollars for a used but unpitted part from ebay, a swap, etc. I am guessing if yours could be repaired it would be about the same possibly more.

Decklid molding from any 1966 F85/Cutlass from the same series (F85, F85 Deluxe, Cutlass) should be the same as your 442 moulding except for the 442 black paint.

So, you find a nicer one that's all bright finish, simply paint the black area for 442. I know that's the way 67 works, and you'd think that having owned a 66 I'd know for sure, but that was 35 years ago. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well

you are correct on 67 but the 66 442 molding is specific to the 442. The Cutlass one has oldsmobile letters across it.

On the 66, didn't the Cutlass say Cutlass, and the 442 said Oldsmobile?
