Was there a super stock 4 on a '71 442? (See picture
This is on a window sticker for a 1971 442. Its a $90 option listed as a SS4. Also there are a couple of broadcast sheets showing a "styled wheel" stamp. The car has SS1's currently (with trim ring) and appears to have had them from day 1. Question is, is this a typo or was this the all chrome SS1 that was offered a short time in 1971? This car was built feb-71.superstock4001.jpgsuperstock4002.jpg

I'd suggest you found a rare typo. The SSIV wheels were Delta 88 wheels, 15" and had a 5x5 volt pattern which is different from A body cars. SS IV wheels also were polycast surfaces with special center caps.

Perhaps it was supposed to be built with these wheels and then at the last minute changed. The reason I say this is because Chrysler was going to offer these wheels on Challengers(and maybe others) in 71 and then didn't. They were called "recall" wheels. The original Indy Pace Car had them, which can be clearly seen in the picture of it crashing into the reports' stand. Pictures of that car since have various different wheels.
So possibly these wheels were supposed to come out and then didn't, the Pace Car would have been built around this time. Anyone have any pictures from the Chicago or Detroit Auto show for 71? They'd no doubt be on a car at the show.

Do any of the boxes on your sheets says wheels and have a 2 letter code typed in the box? My production code "B" sheet has "styled wheel" typed at the bottom and LZ typed in the box that says "wheel type" for SSI wheels.

The "recall wheels" were introduced for the 1969 model year but soon recalled. About a thousand were built on all Mopars before it was pulled.
The SSIV wheels were also sold as the Motor Wheel Exiter and have nothing to do with the Mopar recall wheel. They don't even resemble each other.

Don't forget that 90.00 was for the upgrade to the entire set. The prices are heavily discounted when factory ordered. As example, the OAI hood that costs a fortune nowadays was listed as a factory option (including the underhood components) as only 157.98 and that also included the special paint package.
Just to be clear, this is what SS IV wheels look like. They list in the SPECS manual as option code P05 and cost 101.11. As mentioned earlier the bolt pattern for these wheels is 5x5 and will not fit a stock 442. You'd need either a different axle or a wheel stud adapter to make this work.

Just looked up the 71 442 SPECS and the P05 option there is for SSI's. They list for 90.58. That's enough for me to say that my suggestion about it being a typo is likely correct.

it has LZ. I assume it was a typo on the window sticker.

Here's a list of the recall wheel cars - see attached.

wheels
The second wheel looks very much like the optional wheel that was available briefly on 1971 Buick GS models. It was recalled due to cracking issues. A few sets are still in circulation. I remember seeing a magazine spread on a 1971 GSX & it had these wheels on it. It as a very early production car from the 1971 model year.

Here's an example from 1985 Olds catalogue. Note Item D under 'wheels'

Doesn't exist as far as I know. The chromed SS wheels were produced starting in 1983/84 I believe, for the Hurst Olds. They were available as an option after that on any of the A bodies till early 1988.

You should get out more often. They made the all chrome SS1 from 65-69.
They then made a chrome SS1 style wheel in 71 it is a One year only wheel unique in that it is the only year that will fit disc brakes. (Exception 1969 LY SS1) . No surprise you have not seen a set . They are rare.

Here is two pictures of a drum only standard SSI @67 on the left vs the 69 disc brake
compatible SSI on the right. You'll note the center is the same, a little further out on
the disc brake rim than on the drum brake rim, and the rim itself is different.

The all chrome '64-'69 SSI's were 14"x6".
The all chrome '71 SSI wheel is basically the same wheel
as the 14"x7" painted '70 wheel with the beauty ring,
only it was all chrome like the '66-'69 wheel and didn't use a beauty ring.

All chrome SS1's
I have a matching set of these rims and they're all dated 1969 within a few days of one another. If only used in 71, would these have set on the shelf that long without being used on something else?

Yes, I am looking to sell at some point but thinking I should maybe repaint the black areas first. These rims are in better condition than most this old but are not perfect by any means. Also not real sure what I should ask for them. So, once I have all that figured out, I will probably be listing them on this forum.
