Subject: Tires
My car is a 1972 Cutlass 442 W-30. I have P225/70R14 B.F. Goodrich tires on there now. Those are the tires that came with the car when I bought the car used a few months ago. I've always been a big fan of 60's, I just like fatter tires & more road surface coverage by the wider tire. I've put them on every car I've owned. Can anyone suggest which 60's I should replace the 70's with? Not sure on height, that's the question. 225? 245? 255? I have factory stock 14" wheels on it which I intend to keep. Any pics of your tires may be helpful. Thanks for the help.
Years ago my sis had a 71 442 with factory sport wheels 14x7's Put G70's on the front and L-60x14 on the rear. I thought it looked great and everything fit well but the L60's were a tad bit rounded and should have been put on an 8 inch wheel.
The largest 14" 60-series tires you'll be able to buy are 245/60-14s. These are only 25.5" in diameter - about an inch less than the 225/70-14s you have now. I've run the 245/60-14s on A-body cars and I find they have waaay too much daylight between the tire and the wheel opening for my tastes. Either stick with the 70-series or upgrade to 15".
I'm still thinking about changing the tires. Problem is, the car is at the body shop, I'm having the deck lid & spoiler painted. The previous owner had it painted but it looked like they used a spray can. I'll take some measurements when I get the car back. I want to keep the 14"s on it, don't want to go to 15" because of it throwing the speedometer off. Probably going with the 245's just the same. My car sits a bit low so it should not affect the look of spacing or look between tire & wheel opening. Thanks for the input guys.
The diameter of the wheel is no effect on speedometer calibration. The Diameter of the tire does. If your going to fill the wheel wells up you probably will have to move to a 15" wheel. P275-60-15 (L60-15 for us old timers) are almost the same diameter as P225-70-15 (G70-15).
