Proper tip depth on exhaust??

Getting the exhaust on my 72 in the morning and was doing some research on how to do the tips coming through the cutout bumper. Looking at lots of pics on line they are all over the place. I see them almost flush with the bumper to 3" out past and everywhere in between. How did the factory do it? I think about 1" extended past the bumper looks the best but looking for other opinions.

I agree with 1 inch. I see photos of many beautiful cars with this exhaust set-up, but the looks are spoiled when the tips are left out too far!

Here's a couple of "factory" style pics to give you an idea. I think they're a tad too tight on the 71 pic though.

I agree, about 1/2"- 1" out from the bumper to where the flare starts is where I would generally think was ok. You don't want it to look gawky but also not melt taillights.

Keep in mind that what "we think" looks right may not be the way they came from the factory.

That said, Wild About Cars has what you are looking for. The factory location is shown in the Assembly Manual in the exhaust section (section 8).

I don't know how the factory did them but IMO the tighter to the bumper the better. That's how I did my '68.

Hmmm. For whatever reason, it keeps saying I need a password to WAC. When I know darn well I put it in.

I just yanked out my 69 CSM and it shows the bracket mounting for 442 in section 8, but nothing about tip spacing dimensions. Might be in another year CSM.

That's how mine are. The bottom of the bumper should line up where the flat starts to flare out into the trumpet.

That looks like two different depths to me. I guess the line workers weren't that religious with how they went on.

This is how I did mine but I just went with what looked right to me, about 1" past

For those of you who have trouble signing in to WAC - if the system tells you that your password is incorrect - there is a red button below when this message pops up. If you click on it it will ask for your e-mail and it will send you your user name and a temp password.

The temp password is because your old password was encrypted by the system. When you sign in, you can change the password back to what you want from the dashboard.

What we find is that many members do not remeber their user name and/or password - but the system will tell you what your user name is when it gives you your temp password. make sure you use both from the e-mail to sign in.

That is pretty much how told them to do it. I pick it up on my lunch break.
