Thanks guys. A baby would have been quicker (9 months vs 10.5). I have to say that the job is fantastic. The car is as straight as an arrow! They said that I will be getting an in writing guarantee that the body work and paint will be good for as long as I own the car.

They said for this paint job (because of the two tone) they were going with solvent paint rather than water based. Had my car been mono tone, they would have gone with water based. I think starting in August of 2009, paint shops in Canada have to go with waterbased for all cars. It's supposed to be ready this week to take home. The garage has been completely made over (as per another thread). So, the baby room is ready...now I'm just waiting for the delivery!

Hey Ken,
Isn't the drawing of your blue 442 featured in this month's JWO?

Right at nine/ten months. Looks super. Did you have them paint the under side of trunk and seal area? I have to ask about prices??
Looks like you had them do a little bit more then I am having a paint shop do, because I removed everything except my front seat. I need to update my thread, but my heart is pounding in my throat thing of the BS I seen this week at my shop.

They told me that they were going to paint under the trunk lid and if I can still get the stickers that were there. I said yes and so they painted there. Since they did that I bought new trunk weatherstriping (along with door weatherstriping too). Price is going to be in the $12,000 CAD range. That's about $10,500 USD. I made them redo the underside of the hood and had them paint my original hood too, just in case I want to go back to original in a few years. Probably not, but who knows.

Although it took 10 months I have to give them credit where it's due. When every other body shop said "We don't do old cars" they took on the job. They consulted me on each step in the process. When I showed up at the shop on my lunch breaks, I was given full access to the car to take all the pictures I wanted. When it came time to paint I was called and asked to confirm the stripping was the way I wanted it. I was asked if I wanted to stay and watch her being painted and cleared. I was given access to the paint booth while the striping was applied and in between the spraying.

Of the 10 months in the shop, 6 months was in the off season. They said that I'll be given a written guarantee on the paint and body work. When I asked what that was, they said that since they did the body work and paint, if it ever shows rust, they will fix it for free for as long as I own the car. So I suppose it's not so bad.

Oh yeah! Plan to get back into the cruise nights around here. There's one every night except Sunday/Monday. Also hit a few car shows this summer especially our Oldsmobile show in the town of Olds. . She's not a show car, just a car I show.

Well guys, the car is done and finally home. She looks great and is sporting her original colours as before. She's wearing an OAI hood but the original hood was painted at the same time, just in case I get the urge to go pure. Now I can make up for the car season I missed last time. Didn't realize the withdrawl I would go through without my baby.

Thanks guys. I tried to break my addiction, but the withdrawl was too much...it was 4-4 too much. Now that the car is back, I'm addicted again. Let the cuuisin' season begin.

She looks really sharp. Long wait but great looking results. How much cleanup and detail did you have to do at home to make it look so nice? Does it still have that new body shop smell? LOL.

Really, I'm very happy for ya that you've finally got your baby back. Now momma's going to be a little jealous....

The engine bay was a disaster! After about three hours on a nice day I had it back to where it was. Not bad if I do say so myself and I did get them to drop $1,500 off the bill. That's $500/hr. I got to clean my own car.

There is a Car Show in Calgary that some members are going to. It's June 4th to 7th. The Electric Garage is have a show at the Grey Eagle Casino. I might even drive down to check it out since one of our members is involved in the organization of it.

Hey Ken,
I see you moved the emissions decal down from the fan shroud to the top of the rad cover plate. ??? Does it make any difference? Also, is that one of the Dr. Decal repros? I know the old one was looking a little on the "weathered down and out" side. Nice job cleaning her up. I see you've also kept the factory look with the rad clamps.

The sticker is a repro and it can be located on the fender well, fan shroud or where it is now. Also the rad clamps keep the factory look, because... they are the original clamps.

I had it for the weekend (it was a long weekend here this past weekend). Summer should be a blast. It's like having a new car.

Wow, I ust stumbled across this thread, and I must say that you had one hell of a wait, because of the "crack" body guy who never showed up. They HAD to drop $ off of your bill.
But the end result is something Oldsmobile should have made in droves, nothing short of spectacular, making a Malibu, or any other GM A body look like an unwanted readheaded freckled stepchild with tourets syndrome. This car really makes one wonder how Oldsmobile could ever be cut. It's just that sharp.

That is one beautiful car.
Good things come to those who wait.
Good job.
Jim

Superb, Ken, just superb! That color blue is is one of the best looking blues ever, and the white makes it really pop. I bought my first 442 (a '66) in 1975, because the owner decided to give it up to buy a brand new 1976 442. Same exact colors as yours, and I remember looking it over and thinking what great colors they were.
I'm not a big fan of mods like that hood, but I have to say that hood really looks like it belongs there!!!
That may not be a "show car" to you, but it is definitely a "showcase" of a 1976 Oldsmobile 442.

Thanks. I've never seen another Blue/Silver 442 of my year yet. As for the hood it's something I want to play around with for a while. While the car was being painted, I had them paint the original hood too. So if I decide I've played enough and want a change in hoods, it's only 4 bolts.
