Thanks - I have been lurking around the site for a while and have gotten a lot of good information. Now I am doing some restoration work on the car and will probably have a number of questions for experts on this board!

I purchased this car from the original owner. It has about 78k miles. Very original although it has a number of replacement parts here and there. I am focused on the suspension system now and then plan to move onto the engine compartment.

Really gorgeous car. Congrats on a sweet acquisition.

Is it an original from 72 with the W29 appearance and suspension? Reason I ask is I'm in the process of getting all the parts for the FE2 suspension that came with this package. I'd love to see what the under car shots showing the suspension (Boxed control arms, axle braces, and upper control link look like on an unmolested car.

Any chance you could post them, or send them to me on a PM?

BTW, I think citcapp is right. My first 72 Cutlass was red like yours. My Dad was worried that I'd wash the paint off because I kept it so clean. It was an eye catcher, and it would move!!! Loved cruising with the windows down....it has the coolest look with no posts in the way. Great visibility and nice to have the wind in your hair.

I'm also noticing the little details like B85 Belt line moldings and the Roof drip moldings, Strato Buckets, Dual gate?, sport mirrors. No AC? (glass doesn't look tinted) What other options does it have?

Dealership was A.L. Hyde Oldsmobile in Atlanta.

I will also try to answer some of Allan's questions here. Yes it is the W-29 package, with the "U" code motor. Car is an automatic and was ordered with a/c. However, that was replaced with an aftermarket system and one of the things I am going to restore to more of a factory look. Yes, buckets, the interior is almost 100% original with the original seats front and back. Sport mirrors. I do not have pictures of the underside but will try to take some for you when we start the suspension work this week. Maybe a "before" and "after" set. The color was "burnt orange" although it does look more red in the photo. Yes, it gets lots of looks and thumbs-ups when driving it. I have just finished replacing weatherstripping in the trunk and quarter windows (no power windows).

Fasten Seat Belts

Hard to tell from the pictures but does this car have the 'fasten seat belts' light pod on the dash just beneath the mirror? I have a 72 442 with that light but have seen other 72's without it so trying to figure if it was an option in 72 or which cars had it...mine is from CA so they may have had different requirements....thanks!

The 'fasten seat belts' light pod on the dash was introduced in 1972. It was put on the dash to replace the seat belt light that would be on the idiot light cluster if you ordered the U21 Rallye pac gauges. The rallye pac gauges don't have any place for the fasten seat belt light. Prior to 72, I believe legislation did not require the fasten seat belt light to be included. You'll also find the same light pod on 73-77 A bodies with rallye pacs.

Cowpens....cool....welcome aboard neighbor....

I live close to Lake Greenwood here in Cross Hill SC....Your really close to IDAS 69 he's in Anderson SC....If there's anything we can do to help you out just let us know I check my pm's everyday....We'll have to get together for a car show. I have posted a few from Laurens SC at the "Squeal'in on the Square" car show I went to I took the twins out for a day of sun and fun...I blew a line or top cylinder in the dark blue car when I got home and attempted to put the top up. Luckily I had my buddy there to help me get it back up. That will be my winter project. Here's some pics. We have a guy at the campground we keep our camper at that is from Cowpens. Oldsdroptop

I might be a little late on this one but here goes. The color on the 72 would have been "Flame orange" and the color code was 65. The dealership was A. L. Hyde located in Mableton, Ga on Bankhead Highway.
Sorry for being so late on this.

It might also be "matador red". In some light the pics can look orange. Best way to find out. Look at the cowl tag and post the PNT code. If its matador red, the code will be 75, and if flame orange, as snowballs442 says it will be code 65. The two colors look very similar on a paint chip using indoor light, but really stand out differently under natural sunlight.

FYI, the PNT code will appear as two numbers side by side eg: 65 65 or 75 75. This simply means the upper color (roof) is the same as the lower color (body)

It looks like your car does not have an AOI hood. Does it have the hood with the faux louvers. I want to clone my 72 vert and am trying to get as much correct information on making a correct clone. Beautiful car.
