My Craigslist Find

1968 Olds 442

I found this advertised on craigslist. I wanted to share with you guys so you know a few of these cars are still up for grabs.

The previous owner told me he had this car for 16 years, that he had a 442 as well he sold the 442 an kept this one because the body was in much better condition. However he never knew was a 442

I thought I purchased a 1968 Olds 2 door Hardtop but after I got it home I decoded the Vin # 344878M3XXXXX I believe I have something special Unfortunately the car doesn't have it's original engine this has been replaced with a 78 403 Olds, w/4 speed Muncie trans not sure is trans is original to car.

On the body tag can anyone tell me original color S S I can't find a reference to it interior is black and original. center console might be missing.

body plate is as follows

68 33687 LAN378492
TR 947 S S Paint
I'll try to post some pictures here once I can tell how to do it.

Welcome,

Lansing Built Hardtop Coupe
Jade Gold exterior (The "S S" simply means upper and lower color are the same)
Parchment Bucket Seat interior

The body tag doesn't tell you if it had a console in 68 but if you can get a look at the shifter hump you'll have a pretty good idea.

Hump with no brackets= no console
Hump with brackets= console

Post a few pics when you can

That looks like a solid project (I don't usually say that)

Probably not an original console car judging by what looks like the original carpet with no bracket sticking through.

That's an expensive sport wheel but it will be cracked underneath (still a nice option)

doesn't look like it has Tic Tac Toc

It's missing the peak moulding

Obviously the car has been repainted because that's surely not Jade Gold

Good bones to start with. What part of the country are you in? Does it run & did it come with that shiny new carb?

Wow! Congrats! That's an excellent find, way better than what I've been finding here. Post more pictures when you get a chance.

I bought it as it sits

It had the shiny carb lol Car runs, had noise but wasn't rod and when I put in gear under load stopped. I believe is flywheel bolts or cracked flywheel. I pulled valve covers to diagnose. Engine is a 78 Olds 403 it's a Muncie 7 bolt side cover with reverse in tailshaft trans I moved the car around but has no brakes so I haven't road tested it. I'm in Oklahoma there is some body putty in a few spots but is pretty solid. DC Bumper quoted me around 440 each for bumpers to be straightened and re chromed. I located some SS1 14" 1968 wheels for $300.00 and a guy in okc with 1968 emblems. Going to be a work in progress I don't have the facilities to do a frame off restoration so will be a good driver.

Cleaning

I'm cleaning the car up Saturday vacuuming and cleaning then wiping down upholstery with a uv protector. I'll have a good look at flywheel and I'll post some more pictures.

Take your time finding parts. Bumpers are reproed now for about $350 delivered. I would hold to find a set of 15" rims (unless you're into originality). There are a million places that sell repro emblem sets. I like to use Fusick

Bumpers

My only concerns with reproduction bumpers, I'd have to keep the original ones in the event I'd sell the car. The original bumpers are usually thicker and better fit, for the difference in price of having my original ones done and ordering online seems to be about 150 bucks. I think the value added to the project might be worth it.

Wheels the guy has a set of 70 SS1 wheels as well they are black and chrome 14x7 He said 1968 Original SS1 are all chrome has both sets. I don't think I've seen an original wheel. I just want something that looks nice on the car my first thoughts were of 15" Cragar S/S. However when I found stock original ones thought might be better choice. Anyone have a picture of stock 1968 SS1 wheels you can post?

Ended up being spun rod bering so I found a 455 to build, and installed. The 403 is on an engine stand in my storage for one day it will live again!
