im new to this site & need help on 87 442?
im in need of some info on vin id mostly the 8th dig. of the 87 422 ...there is some confusion on my part from what i can find the 8th dig. is the eng. i.d. code (9) or (y) mean the same...anyone have any input on this??????.....thank you keith

Y motors are basic 307 motors.
9 motors are also 307s but have a few upgrades.
The 9 motor uses an Olds 350 harmonic balancer and the Y uses a different smaller, crappier balancer.
9 motors have upgraded better flowing water pumps.

VIN Y is 140 HP, VIN 9 is 180 HP. There should not be any real 87 442s with a VIN Y motor.
