Hood insulation pad question

Hello, which side of the hood insulation pad attaches to the underside of the hood, there is a smooth dark side and a rough fiberglass side to the pad, This is a 65 442, thanks.

Jerry,

The dark side goes towards the hood and the rough fiberglass grey side goes towards the engine. I am actually installing one on my car this weekend as well.

Hood insulation

Maybe I bought the cheap stuff but I did that and wind from the fan blew a hole in the insulation. I think next time I put the hard side down.

I just installed one in my 79 Cutlass and I put the hard side down (exposed) I used round clip number 3977775. Got the pad from Fusick's, what I like about it is it has the holes already in it, no guesswork.

I installed it with the hard side facing the hood, I used the clips from Kusick, so far no problems.

Marc,

1st off "Thank You" for your Service Sir! My dad was in Vietnam, he was a member of the "Big Red 1". I bought my Hood Pad on eBay thru The Parts Place and since I work for Advance Auto Parts I bought my Round Hood Pins there, you will need 13 of them for the install, everything went fine as I have put a lot of these on over the years although some times 4 hands are better than 2 when doing this job. I will take some Pictures of my install over the weekend and post then on the forum.

Thanks,

Did you use any adhesive? How tough was it to install the pad without taking the hood off.

I installed a new hood pad in my '78 Toronado, and I had no choice as to how it was oriented as it came with a cutout for the underhood light (lower right in the photo). Thus, the pad could be installed only one way, and that was with the hard side facing the engine. I always thought this made sense because the hard side protects the insulation from any fluids, dirt, etc. that might get onto it from the engine compartment.

I did use adhesive, which helped hold it in place while I pushed the clips into place.

Makes more sense with the hard side down, when the loose side surface gets dirty it's impossible to clean, next time will install hard side down.

I’ve been to a lot of car shows lately and see many top notch restored cars that don’t have the insulation pad under the hood. What is it’s actual purpose of it and why are some people not using them? Thanks —Billy

I did not use any adhesive. It was a little difficult to install it by myself but after I got a few of the round clips in it was fine.
