I was trying to buy a gas tank for my '68 442 convertible from Rockauto, got a snotty kid (named "Joseph") who told me their tank was for a coupe or sedan only, and absolutely wouldn't fit my convertible. I'm sure he was only going on what the online catalog says. Is there a difference between the convertible and sedan/coupe gas tanks, and where's the best place to buy a new tank for my convertible?

 

I don't think there is a diff.
The Spectra tanks out of Canada
are reputed to be the best for OEM replacement.

Ok, guys, good to know. I'd like to get the stainless one on Ebay, but don't know about the quality. Anyone here have any experience with them? And, thanks again for the info. This is a great site for the 442 enthusiast.

 

On eBay, the vendor, tomsclassic has two tanks listed: the stainless steel one, and doesn't say what capacity it is, and a regular steel one that is 20 gallons. I thought I read somewhere that the correct capacity is 17 gallons. I want to make sure I buy the correct one. Anyone know? Thanks.

I used a Spectra tank I bought off amazon for around $140 to replace my 68 442 convertible I had. It fit great and with amazon, shipping was free.

 

And Spectra is NOT made in china! Very Cool!

 

It's the same tank. I know, because I replaced mine a dozen years ago.

 

I have a toms classic version in my '68 HC. Fit perfectly, comes with new stainless straps and a new sending unit (stainless). I've jammed 18 gal in it, so I guess it's more than 17 capacity? No problems
