Did the 72 442 come with a 350 engine?

Did the 1972 442 ever even come with a" 350" engine ?? 73, yes, maybe. I "think" 72 still was a 455 in a 442. A 350 was only a cutlass or cutlass "S"... JMO, Please correct me if I'm wrong.. You should "Post" the "engine "., CODE.

In 1972, the 442 reverted to being an option on the Cutlass and no longer its own series. It was an "appearance and handling package." It was available with ANY engine, and it was available on the Cutlass, Cutlass S, and Cutlass Supreme.

This why being a 442 in 1972 isn't quite the thing it was from '68 through '71, when the 442 was a line of cars separate from Cutlass and F-85.

This is from the Cutlass page of the '72 Dealer Specs Book. The wording is similar for the S and Supreme. Option W39 is the Hurst shifter. B96 is wheel opening moldings. FE2 is the Rallye suspension package. Y73 is the paint stripe decal on the hood. W30 is the performance package that included a 455. So what this means is that, while you could get the 442 option on any Cutlass with any engine, if you went for the "performance package," you HAD to get the 442 option.

Thank You. Yes that is correct, there were many 72 442's with the 350. It was not a performance engine but they ran well. 350 was a goos engine.

The 1972 442 was an option package and my understanding is the base engine was the 350-2 bbl.

Correct. The RPO W29 package was available with any engine offered in the Cutlass or Cutlass S or Cutlass Supreme models that were available with W29. This includes the VIN H 350 2bbl single exhaust with 160 pavement-ripping HP, the VIN J 350 2bbl dual exhaust with 170 HP, the VIN K 350 4bbl single exhaust with 180 HP, and the VIN M 350 4bbl dual exhaust with 200 HP (all are net ratings). I have to laugh when people badmouth the VIN 9 307 with 180 HP in a car that's at least 800 lbs lighter than the 72s.
