any information on 1971 w30 production numbers?
I was wondering if there was a way to determine how many 4 speed w30's were made. I have seen the numbers listing the numbers for convertibles and hardtops etc, but never broke down any further. I had a friend tell me there was a 71 in hemmings that said one of 265? or something close to that. I figured one of you guys would know.

If you mean Oldsmobile production records, those would have come from Oldsmobile in response to direct questions.
Over the years, people have aggregated the responses and some production numbers, broken out by option, are known.
Subsequently, there was a fire at an Olds warehouse that destroyed their records.

The ONLY production numbers by option is auto vs manual.
There is NO record of production based on any other options only guesses.

^^THIS. When someone claims that their car is "1 of 48 in this color" or some other such incredibly precise number, they are pegging the BS meter. Even worse is when the seller claims "one of only three known to exist" or something like that. There is no possible way to know how many still exist.

In my signature, I cite that my car is one of two remaining that are known to exist. I don't think this statement is BS at all. It is based on OCA data collected on 1964 442s and some in general Internet research where I have not been able to turn up even another one....
Of course my car wasn't even known to exist by anyone except for the owner and her immediate family until it hit craigslist late last year but I don't think it is too extreme to cite such numbers if I can provide context and source data. Maybe BS in some cases but I don't think my statement is far fetched...

Why do people even need to make unsubstantiated claims like this? The 148 production number is documented. Admittedly few survive. Is that number 2 or 5 or 25? No one knows. No one can possibly know.

You just made my point. No one has any idea how many are still out there. If it makes you feel better to claim it is 1 of 2 left, knock yourself out. "Internet research" is not even close to proof of this. I can guarantee that several of the rare cars I own (like my 68 W-30) do not show up on any list of "surviving cars".
