AC on my 70 W30

So my ac was not cool so I put one can of R12 in the system. It cooled better but not as cool as it should had. I put another can in and it cools to at least 50* (don't have anything that will read below that) when idling. When I go out on the road it does not cool near as well. It does not get hot but clearly falls off. I am wondering if I put too much R12 in the system. I put two (2) 12 oz cans in. Unfortunately, I don't have any gauges.

Thanks

Well, without gauges it is difficult to determine if the system is overcharged. If you have a drier with a sight glass, you can tell if it's undercharged by the visible bubbles. You should try to find/borrow gauges to check your system.

Cannot do this repair without gauges, could have an underlying problem that is causing loss of cooling. Have you cleaned front of condenser coil? Could be evaporator is freezing up, as RPM's increase, pressure on low side drops. Only way to accurately repair this is with accurate gauge readings.

Has the system ever been apart? I am finding that the majority of the parts cars and even nice cars I pull apart have loads of junk in front of the evap coil. For sure need to put gauges on it to know what is going on.
