68 442 vert 400g pulleys and water pump question

I'm trying to help my buddy out. He has a 68 442 convertible w no AC. He got the car in boxes w misc. parts. Does any one know or know where to find the correct water pump ( short, med, long) and pulley configuration (stamped letters)? The car has a 400g block w no AC. Thanks for any info.

There would be different configurations for a '68 4-4-2 without A/C, and that would be a car with the heavy duty cooling option (RPO Y72 which includes the 1100777 alternator) and a car without that option (3-core radiator and 1100767 alternator), and a car with or without power steering. Both alternators would have external voltage regulators.

If you could narrow it down to if the car has power steering or not, and if the car has heavy duty cooling or not, I believe a pulley configuration can be provided.

Here's what I have for a '68 4-4-2 without heavy duty cooling and power steering: crankshaft pulley code KB (2 groove), power steering pulley code KG (single groove), water pump pulley code KE (2 groove), alternator is part number 1100767 (37 amp), original GM water pump casting number is 398681.

With heavy duty cooling and power steering: crankshaft pulley code KC (3 groove), power steering pulley code KH (2 groove), water pump pulley code KP (3 groove), alternator is part number 1100777 (55 amp), original GM water pump casting number is 400269.

The '68 assembly manual doesn't go into detail about the codes for the pulleys but I found that, in restoring my '69, the '69 assembly manual did and the codes were the same for both years.

The 3-core radiator is smaller that the 4-core radiator. It can be seen in the upper radiator support (smaller for 3-core than 4-core).

Hope this helps identify what your friend has.

That's a good question. I'm hoping the water pump experts will chime in on that. Both of my cars use the heavy duty 40269 water pump (HD cooling on the '68 and A/C on the '69) and I never measured the water pumps - I just got them rebuilt.

You should be able to tell if your friend's car has heavy duty cooling or not by the number of grooves in the crankshaft pulley and the power steering pulley.

I do have what I believe to be is an aftermarket heavy duty water pump but I never put it on to see for sure. It measures (from the flat back surface) 4 7/8" to the outside end of the casting, 5 3/4" to the outer edge of the fan clutch mounting surface, and 6 1/8" to the tip of the center guide. Don't know if that helps or not.

PS: I just remembered I have an extra 400269 water pump in the shop so I compared it against the aftermarket water pump I have. The measurements are the same so the aftermarket unit is for heavy duty cooling or A/C.

Perfect info Randy thanks, I found the HD cooling water pump is 5.5" and the no AC pump is 5"

This page http://www.oldsmobility.com/oldsmo/v....php?f=6&t=391 was very helpful in determine water pump sizes.
