442 with buckets but no console?
442 with buckets but no console?
I saw this CL east coast ad for a 1968 442 for just under 10k which seemed like a pretty good deal (but I live to far away from it so I can't take a look anyway).
But the brief description says it was a "rare car with buckets but no console". Was that even an actual option you could request?
I saved the ad content and posted it here if someone wants to read the rest and look at the pictures.

For the 1968 model year (and most others in the musclecar years), the 442 package came with bucket seats as standard equipment. A bench seat was available as a credit option. The base transmission was the HD three speed manual with floor shift. The AT was optional and came with a column shifter (even with the buckets). The console was an extra cost option in all cases, though most ordered it.
Once again here is a seller trying to advertise an unpopular option combination as "rare" and thus somehow "valuable".

Joe, if I am not mistaken, and very well could be, weren't bucket seats standard before '68 in the Cutlass line-up. I've seen many over the years with the buckets and no console. The '70-'72 Cutlass Supreme came standard with buckets and the "sport bench" (fold down center armrest) was a "no-cost--no-credit" alternative. I know you were referring to the 442, but I think as far back as the '64 (that am familiar with and owned) Cutlass had buckets in the base price.
My '78 Omega SX had buckets without a console. They were separate options on that car. I always wished I would have ponied up the extra cash for the console when ordering it, but money was tight at the time and I really wanted the SSIII wheels more. I even ordered it without a radio to save a bit.

For all the Cutlass Supreme 2dr and converts, not just the ones with the 442 option.
Since the 442 was not a stand alone model for all of "the musclecar years", I was trying to be more generic. Clearly my attempt to avoid describing all possible combinations and terminologies failed...
My '68 442 convertible is a one-owner given to me by my best friend, and I've known the car all its life, including watching it being unloaded from the truck at the dealership in KC, and it has bucket seats, a 4-speed manual transmission, and no console. Also, strange as it may seem the rubber shift boot is not fastened to the floor with screws, a chrome ring or anything. It just sits on top of the carpet, and again this is all 100% stock from the factory.
No, it just appears to not be fastened. It is screwed to the floor with a metal ring, The bottom of the boot has the flange that is secured to the floor with a ring and screws. There is the upper flange of the boot that goes on top of the carpet and is not secured. (The carpet goes between the flanges)

My '68 W30 post car has buckets, no console.
Finding that rubber floor boot for w/o console was difficult.
As for your CL ad
I see "Oldsmobile" and a rocket emblem on the hood, which should NOT be there.
So, what-all ELSE is incorrect... the VIN???
RH mirror has tape on it?
Better inspection including all available #'s would be in order.

My 1965 442 was an automatic with bucket seats floor shift in console. When I restored the car I converted it to manual trans (Richmond 5 speed) and could not justify the cost of the 64-69 manual trans console so I run with out one. I think it came out ok!

Nice looking car. Nice pics too.
A '70 442 that I bought back '83, which my brother now owns, had almost every option, both luxury and performance, but was ordered with buckets and automatic shifter on the column. When I asked the original owner why he did not order the floor shifter/console, he told me that when he went to the dealership to look at the new cars, there was a 442 in the showroom that had a console. When his kids got into the 442, they went over the bucket seats and stepped on the console door to get to the back seat. He determined that the console would had been broken within the first week, so he ordered his 442 with the standard column shift.
When I got the 442, my kids would go over the bucket seats and through the center opening to the back seat. Always reminded me of the story that the original owner told be me about the console and ordering the standard column shift.

Fyi
That re-po boot had perforations in all layers so the ring was put on top. The way you describe would be preferred but the holes in the top layer looked silly. Sometimes one has to make the most out of what they have.
