1987 442 rear end

I found a wrecked 87 442 in the junk yard today.
Any chance that it is an 8.5 rear end?

Thanks,

Brian

Yes, crawl under and look and see if it has square fangs on the bottom.

If it's a real 442 with the original rear, it will be an 8.5" 3.73:1 axle.

Thanks, Going back to get it in the morning. It is the real thing but it was trashed. Wrecked up front, engine and trans gone some one destroyed the console and dash pulling the stereo system out of it. The damn yard lifted it with a loader under the roof and busted the glass and warped the quarters and dented the drivers door. The only good stuff left was the door panels the steering box and the rear end.

Thanks,

Brian

Fyi

Also grab the dash inserts & matching pieces from the console. This is the only year that they are not crappy looking wood & fit all the 81-88 models. I have resold complete sets for over $200 .

If the trunk lid is still on the car the sticker on the underside will include the option codes for the 8.5" ring gear (G87), the 3.73 gears (GT4) & posi if applicable (G80).This will verify that the car is in fact a 442 since no other Olds A body got the 8.5" rear end that year.

Are you serious?! I cna't stand the crappy black plastic inserts in my '87 442 compared to the nice burlwood ones that were in my '85 442. They may not have been real wood, but they looked a hell of a lot better. To each his own, I guess.

Everything about the '87 is cheap compared to the '85. The only good thing better in the '87 is the 120 mph speedometer.
