1971 Olds 442 tribute car - trim question:

Greetings,

you all are a great group...

i recently purchased a '71 Cutlass S '442 Tribute' car. i did not set out to buy a clone/tribute car - it's not really my thing - BUT i could not pass on this car... it is so clean and priced right (i hope) too. it is a frame off restored car... not cosmetically perfect - but mechanically it may be close to 100%.

because it's a tribute car, i may as well get it as close as possible. is the trim across the trunk lid in the photo an 'S' feature only? did the 442 only come with O L D S M O B I L E across the rear?

thanks again -

The 442 did not come with the trim with Oldsmobile on it. It came with a set of 3 thinner peices that ran along the edge of the trunk lid and 2 small quarter extension moldings. It also had a double pinstripe over the top of the trim. By the way nice car.

You may also want to put the stripe down the center of hood and the smaller side stripes on the body that the 442 came with. This stripe also went across trunklid. Do not fall prey to putting W30 stripes on the car that most 442's seem to have but are not corrwect.

I agree, a very nice car! I did notice the oil fill tube is bent forward. I thought the 1968 AC equipped motors were the only ones with the oil fill tube that shape. Not being picky, just a comment since you said your trying to make it as correct as possible. John

Now that I look at the photo again I see there's a few things on the engine that may not have been correct. Sorry, the comment on the oil fill tube may not be what your after.

ALL comments are welcome. seriously. i did not build the car... he built it to look right - but not exactly right! the motor, i was told, is an 'F' code '69 block. it may be a '68 F code... 396021 F casting. it also has C code heads - 394548 castings and Olds OEM W&Z exhaust manifolds. It has a W31 grind camshaft, etc. The list goes on and on.

Thanks for the comments.

The post above shows trunk lid stripe however the wide side stripe is the w30 stripe. Check google images or Ebay for cars with correct striping. Black vinyl top would most likely call for a black stripe. Try this link

thanks... i dig it too. it's #67 Sienna Gold.

Does anyone have a source for the hood and other decals? I've checked Phoenix Graphics, Fusick, OPG, Paddock, etc. without any luck.

The 1971 stripes for the non w25 hood are unique as shown in the photos below.
These measurements are taken from a low milage original paint 1971 442 convertible survivor:
1/4" stripe
3/16" gap (no stripe)
3 1/2" stripe
3/16" gap (no stripe)
1/4" stripe

YES, I know this thread is million years old but hear me out: A friend found a broadcast card belonging to a 1971 Cutlass Holiday Coupe with paint code (67 sienna), black bucket seat interior and black top. He would like to reunite this broadcast card with its original car. This is a long shot, but is your Body Number 226299? Also Tagging @don71 in-case it is his broadcast card
.
