1967 442 originality question
Hi,
I just came across what is supposed to be a 67 442. I am a Pontiac guy and the reason I got this thing is because it has a Pontiac 400 in it.
This poor car has been butchered to say the least. Pontiac 400, Saginaw 4 speed, chevy 10 bolt, etc. It does appear to be a factory 4 speed and it does have
a 442 hood, some emblems, and one no notch bezel. I have attached a pic of the data plate. I have done some reading and have seen the info about the 5V and 5VY. This plate
has 5VM on the plate and I have seen no mention if this code. Any ideas if the M means anything as far as it being a real 442?
Thanks
Darren

Hi,
Thanks for the info Oldsmaniac. The 2L is news to me. That would seem to add to the evidence for sure.
Very similar to a 65 GTO. They had a 5n and then 66 got its own vin prefix.

There were five option code "groups" coded on the cowl tag. The digit signifies the group (no digit meant group one). The "5" is simply option code group five. The "V" signifies the W29 442 option. The "Y" indicates deluxe seat belts and is unrelated to the 442 option. The "M" appears to refer to a center rear seat belt and was only used on cars built before Oct 1966, from what I can tell. Apparently after that all cars got the center rear belt.
What is the built date on this cowl tag.
