14.58 MPG in my 71 W30 with 3.08 gears
I checked the mileage on my 442 and was pleasantly surprised. I drove 100 miles down an interstate at 70+miles per hour. I took the back roads home and even wound it up to 124 miles per hour according to my GPS on a long country straight road. I drove it through car craft traffic jams in St. Paul and still got 14.58 MPG. I bet if I took it easy and stayed on the highway I could get 16 mpg with my Olds.
That is pretty good with the 455 - I would be proud! My 350 got an avg of 19.5 over a 1900 mile trip from Geogia to TX, including going through the Smokey mountains.
19 is what the mid-sized v6 suvs and minivans got when i took 2000-3000 mile vacations, so i do not feel bad.

The best that I ever got with my '70 SX back in the mid 70's was 13.6 on the highway, and I am assuming that it had the factory 2:56's, but I don't know for sure. I put the speedo needle past the right hand turn signal indicator once, so I don't think that it had too stiff of a rear gear in it. My '71 350 with 3:42's gets 12 mpg highway.
my Rallye 350 is at 16 MPG with 3:42. everyone needs to remember to check if there odometer is accurate. many people think they are getting one thing but if the odometer is off then it will be something differant. i check mine with a 50 mile stretch of highway and using the mile markers. a GPS will work good also.

Took my 72 Cutlass S out on the weekend for a car show down in Olds Alberta (Show was called the Rocket Roundup - 442much is the club prez). Anyway it ended up being a 347 mile round trip in one day. My car has its original 350/350 TH. 4bbl. 2.73 rear open. Average speed was 70 miles per hour. Average mileage was 21.5!!!! But then I was holding it pretty steady and most of the road was pretty flat. I had forgotten what those old 350's are capable of. I remembered it would go like a scared bunny, but was VERY pleasantly surprised that its mileage was so good. I think I should do a compression test to see whats left. Last time I did one, 6 of the cylinders were at 145, one was 135 and one was 140. Oh yeah, no oil use according to the dipstick and it still looks like it was just changed.
Thats great mileage. Years ago I had a 67 Cutlass supreme convertible with a 330 4 bbl and a 4 speed, 3.90 gears get 19.2 mpg. I feel the 350 Olds engine was one of the best ever.
Yes it was very hot at Car craft.
