Correct Color of SSII wheels - 1970 442 convertible

Hi. I'm researching the correct color for SSII N66 wheels for my car (see photo). The Factory Assembly Manual states:

"N66 WHEELS ARE TO BE PAINTED DARK
GRAY LOW GLOSS ENAMEL CODE #372
IN AREAS SHOWN. (SEE FIG. 3)"

However, the Manual goes on to say"

"FOR CARS ORDERED WITH SPECIAL ORDER COLORS AND EOUIPPED WITH
HUB CAPS WHEELS ARE TO BE PAINTED IN LOWER BODY SPECIAL ORDER
LACOUER."

I have a special order color car, Rallye Red. I know in 1971, the SSII wheels were frequently painted to match the body color, but I can't say I've seen any in 1970 looking this way. Though the Factory Manual may suggest this?

Also, there is a set of 15" rims advertised as off a 1969 for sale online. See photo. I think that factory 15" only came on the 1969 Hurst/Olds.... I am wondering if they will work on my 1970??

Any SSII suppliers you can recommend...I'm looking at 15" aftermarkets perhaps.

Thanks!

Poverty Hub Caps maybe?

Hmmmm....after seeing another post, I realize there is a poverty hub cap option...seems like the wheel in that case is painted to match the body color for that rim option, so I'm now thinking gray is still the correct color for the SSII for my special order paint.

AFAIK 1970 SSIIs should have Argent (Dk. Silver Metallic) centers regardless of body color.

Well, you're certainly not the first to ask this question. Have a look at the following threads, it may help you without having to go around the bush too much. This should get you started. You might have to go through several of the permalinks on each thread to find all the info you're looking for, but it's there. Good luck with your project. FWIW, I decided I wanted my wheels to match the body color. I think it looks pretty good, but then again my car is silver. I'm sure however you decide it will dramatically change the look of your car back to factory.

You are correct with two exceptions. The 1970 Indy Pace cars had their wheels painted white to match the body, and the 1970 Rallye 350 had wheels painted Sebring Yellow. All other 1970 cars with SSIIs got argent wheels. The body color SSIIIs were not generally available until the 1971 model year.

And yes, the quote from the assembly manual refers to the plain steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps, NOT to the SSII wheels.

You are correct in that only the H/O in '69 had the 15x7 wheels, and those in the photo look weird, they have a very shallow trim ring, and the center appears to be offset to the outside of the wheel, like they are frontwheel drive. Use caution.

They are not FWD and they are not 15" either. The seller measured the outside diameter. The 14" or 15" dimension refers to the size of the hole in the tire, NOT to the outer diameter of the wheel, since the lips of the wheel need to extend beyond the hole in the tire to retain the tire. The correct measurement is across the bead seating surface on the wheel.

They should have 15x7jj stamped on them if 15" or 14x7 if 14", and of course 14x6jj if the correct '69 SSII. Joe, do you see what I mean by the whole center section appearing to be raised? Just don't look right. I have all of the above mentioned sizes, and none look like them.

I think it's an optical illusion since the wheel on the right has the wrong trim ring. Look at the one on the left by comparison. I think these are 14x6, by the way.

I think that you may be right, the one on the left does look normal and a 14x6.
