355 build
I have been collecting parts for a small block build for awhile now. I figured now is a good time to start a thread so i can ask questions along the way. The block is the original engine from my 72, it had a badly damaged cylinder so i had it sleeved and bored .030 over. I purchased a set of forged flat top TRW pistons from the classifieds along with roller tip rocker arms, timing chain and oil pump. Over the summer i picked up a running engine with a fresh set of heads from a local guy. I am dropping the crank off this week for a polish and to drill for the pilot bushing. The heads will be disassembled, home ported, and milled for screw in studs. I may also have them install bigger valves, i have not decided yet. As far as the cam goes i am undecided yet, I have a performer RPM intake and quick fuel 750 double pumper that will top it off. This engine will find its way into the 64 at some point in time.

Not sure how much hp you’re looking for but just put in 2.00/1.62’s and have the machine shop do a bowl cut. If you want to dress them from there then do so. Otherwise unless you’re an experienced head porter I’d leave them alone.

This will not be a max effort build, I’m saving the standard bore block for a build when the new heads come out. I’m just looking to clean up the bowls for better low lift flow. Once i figure out what the compression will be i can start looking at cams. This should be a fun engine with a 4 speed and 3:73 gears.

I bought a cam from the classifieds here. It’s a Crower 284 HDP, 284 .517 on the intake and 290 .528 exhaust on a 112 centerline. I will have to call Crower and see what springs they recommend and get lifters also. It’s more cam than i was originally thinking, but i still have time to change my mind. It will probably be 2 more weeks before i get the crank back and i just dropped the heads off today.

I assume the heads are early ones? If they are rebuilt, they are probably close to the 64cc number now. How much was removed from the deck to straighten it? You will be over 10 to 1 and may be around 10.5 to 1 if close to 0 deck. I would not go any smaller than that cam. I assume 93 octane is planned?

And it looks like you have a decent block there. The dimples in the lifter area normally means it’s a pretty good one, slightly thicker walls on average.
