Why is my "avatar" a "7"...I never asked for an avatar

There must have been a software change, if you don't pick one it uses the first letter/number in your username. It's like this on many sites.

Interestingly, the ramification(s) of this change requires all CO members MUST have an Avatar. With just a squeaky bit of knowledge w/ coding, I'm curious what benefit may exist? I can't think of one. The more you load up cross-links in a DB, the the larger the DB grows & the greater amount of work required to "index" these links (e.g. CO member name + Avatar). I mean normally you'd employ a relational DB. Requiring an Avatar necessitates an object-oriented DB. Even if they employed both a relational DB + object-oriented DB they've essentially increased the complexity of DB management. Peculiar (to my little pea brain). Most likely "kiddies" playing in the CO playground.

There are many subscribers whose site name begins with 7. What is their automatic avatar? The first and second digits?
Probably not. There are many 70xxx names, and there are 70442xxx names as well.
Was this thought out very well? It's puzzling.
And, as Norm says, it complicates rather than simplifies administration of the site.
