removing W30 stripes

removing W30 stripes
I have a red single stage 70 442 and previous owner applied white W30 type stripes (poorly). They are painted on, you can feel the edge, and do not belong on this car so I want to remove the stripes and have the correct smaller pin striping applied. What are my chances of color sanding the stripes off and not having to re apply the red?

The paint looks too nice to experiment and mess up. If it were less nice, I’d be tempted to try some type of solvent on a very small area. I hear tale of oven cleaner removing paint, but that’s smoking around gasoline. If it were me, I may get creative - tape off and wet sand the area, try and color match and blend, but make sure it’s square and aligned. Then, paint the correct smaller stripes. If there is residual shadowing, it make look somewhat cool and add depth. Again, it may be too nice to experiment with.

It can be done, but not knowing how much red is applied it's a gamble. If your not experienced in doing this leave it to the professionals.
More than likely the side's will have to be blended. I have done this and it takes skill ( which I may or may not have).

I had a 69 Super Sport Camaro once and the car was bc/cc and I applied the hockey stick stripes with semi gloss rattle can. Looked absolutely perfect and if I changed my mind later I could wash them off with laquer thinner and not harm the gold
This is that car years later on a Mecum auction.

It may be better to tape the arch is off to the correct with, and then spray the white with the body color, red, blended it in to cover the excess white. Then you just have to repaint the thin. Top pinstripe over the red once it dried. You’re basically talking just the arches

Yea the white is to close to the lip but I would leave that alone and focus on getting the arch stripe to the correct 1” width..I think that would make you more than happy.. heck there are professional restorations I’ve seen that have the stripes wrong.

Professionally I would consider it to be impossible to remove the stripes without needing to respray the red. However, if you’re patient and meticulous enough it could be done. I could have it prepped and the red re-sprayed long before you finish wetsanding and buffing the stripes off though.
