Gas tank vented into the trunk , does not sound safe or legal . Does trunk smell like fuel ?

The stock fuel tank vent is a steel tube that goes thru the trunk and back out, does yours look like this?

My 71 98 has a gas tank vent under the trunk. There should be multiple rubber hoses coming off the top of the fuel tank that go to the vent and charcoal canister.

A 1971 has an evaporative emissions recovery system that is completely different from the simple vent on the OP's 1966 car.

nicks1966 good picture of the fuel tank vent in the trunk .
could something in the trunk move and break the vent tube? then its venting into the trunk . or does this vent tube have a shield around it ?

Is that maybe an early form of separator so vapor escapes w/o fuel getting out? Later cars like my '71 Cutlass have an actual vapor separator unit behind the back seat. Lines from the tank lead to it, then a line to the charcoal cannister in the engine compartment. The cannister stores the fumes, & is purged when the car runs.

Gasoline vapor recovery systems were not federally required until part way through the 1970 model year. Before that the tank was just vented to atmosphere. The "J" shaped vent tube was intended to prevent liquid gasoline from coming out on steep slopes or under heavy braking.
