I used a flexible vinyl primer on the rubber bushings after a thorough cleaning with laquer thinner, and after 5 yrs years, they still look great.

GREAT NEWS!

My body guys knows how important that my body tag was and how determined I was to keep it in good condition. It turns out he was screwing with me the entire time. He had thought that they were to be bare with no paint. He had primed and painted it and lost the numbers from all the paint. He had planned from the beginning to remove the paint after he was done. He knew I was going to freak out when I saw it but let me think it was bad. When I showed up today this was the first thing he showed me. Only thing is, Now I have to paint it. He thought they were not painted. Boy what a relief! Now I am going to hurt him.

The bottom side. The paint on the bushings did not crack at all! I am happy so far but I have no idea how to get the fenders on without to scratch them. I will figure it out.

Thanks guys. This is the funest part of the entire build. Putting all the little parts on in the right order. There is alot of work I can do with what I already have but i have got to start selling stuff. I am hurting pretty bad right now. I have got to hold off on my Legendary order till I get more sold. Buying my wife that Acadia put the hurts on me.

Thanks.

I am not getting my hopes up for the nationals. I don't think I can finish it by then.

Looks very nice, love the color. If it were mine I would have had the body man hang the doors, hood, fenders, core support and inner fenders. Getting all those parts aligned is a major pain in the ***.

I am going to get as much as possible together before hanging body panels. I will get them on and then likely have him come over to help align them. Don't want to install the interior with the doors on or mount the firewall stuff with the front on. The doors are seasy

beautiful

Came out breathtaking, truly like a museum piece.

I hope that isnt two small scratches on the front fender? lower front wheel arch? I would be as nervous as heck with all that ' jewelery' laying about, I have seen guts tape the edges etc during assembly. Trulynan over the top build though...

I really like the way you have the frame cocooned. Is that Twilight Blue? Looks like that paint job was worth the wait!

I seen where ScottoW31 did that on his build. I may take it all off now that the body is on it but want to hang some static drop cloth under the entire bottom side. It will be a long time putting back together and I don't want that much dust blowing up from under the bottom. It is a Twilight Blue stripe delete car. The paint job is far better than original. I was undecided what way I wanted to go but am happy with the "over restored" paint job. The color is very hard to photograph. Some pics it looks completely differant than others.

Looks Awesome Eric!!! great news on your trim tag!!! Your bodyman must have spent some serious time loading up the paint on the tag for that "joke"! He did a good job,it definitely looked wasted! Now it's pay-back time!!!

Absolutely stunning, I admire your diligence and attention to correctness. Well done indeed!
I have a question as to what brand of paint your painter used. Your Twilight blue is very vivid, whereas my painter did a 70 GTO and the version of Twilight blue he used was very muted in color. It looked nice but wasn't correct. I had the same problem picking Saturn Gold for my 71 442. All the companies have their own version, which varies slightly from one another. Except for one, they all changed color once the light wasn't directly on the paint. I guess it's all to do with the makeup of today's eco friendly paint. Just curious what you used.

Also, whose exhaust did you use?

I have no idea what it is. I plan to ask but keep forgetting. I had nothing to go by so I have no clue if this is the "correct" shade or amount of matellic. I may get it beside a correct one and find I am way off. I am happy with it so i can live with it correct or not. When metallic is involved I am not sure there is a good consistant base to go by.

Painted the chrome edges on the dash. The pictures don't show it very well but it is the best match I could find to chrome. I tried 3 brands of paint pens and none of them looked as good as the Krylon craft chrome. I tested several times on old console inserts and found the best way to paint it was with Q tips. The Q tip was loaded enough that i could go the full length with a single stroke. It is far from perfect but will work just fine for me. I am not sold on the dash color. I think we missed the color for repainting it. Side by side they look the same but if I take pictures of them they look completly differant.

Interior paint

just got in some paint for my dash pad and my I/p this week from carpaintonline.com. I have been looking hi and low for some one to furnish me with interior paint. I went to auto paint suppliers body shops with the numbers for the paint I needed always got the wrong match.finally found this web site clicked on oem code and entered the code from the callouts on the 70 assembly manual and walaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. got the ppg code, and the paint is said to be interior paint the dash paint is a low gloss (lg) and all the other interior paints are semi gloss (sg) as they should be. ordered the paint and the spray out I did on my dash pad and I/p, ashtray cover is a perfect match down to the correct gloss. may be u could order paint for your dash from them.

thanks ray

I used Bare Metal Foil on my dash edges. It is the closest thing to vacuum metallizing.

Bare metal foil is available from hobby shops etc it is normally used for reproducing chrome bumpers on models or even aluminum skin on airplanes etc. You can go to www.bare-metal.com but it is available many places, its basically a very thin foil, thinner then reynolds wrap with adhesive you would peel the backing off, place and rub it down, I have used it detailing my boats etc but never on a car, my442 you must have the patience of a saint as you would need to trim the metal or use a paaper trimmer to make such a thin line. It would be great to see them make it in a pinstripe roll

Started to assemble the dash and parts today. I started to install the wiper switch and forgot about the wood grain. I don't have any glue for the wood grain so I am on hold for some of the dash.

I took the best wiper switch I had and took it apart to clean all the aged grease out of it. The wiper switch can be tricky so if you rebuild any switches I would not do a wiper switch for a first attempt. The most important part of this switch is that the copper ground plate is grounded good. Most all these old switches need replaced or rebuilt because of the dried grease. I have even had an NOS switch not work before because the grease was dried out and not allowing good contact. I just rebuild them all now and not replace any. I did get a replacement GM headlight switch.

If you are a purist you had better turn your head. I am adding the light package to this car. I hate not having floor lamps and to get them i have to add the entire light package. I will likely never need them because it is almost never going to be driven at night. Even if I don't need them I have always like having the option and adding it because of that. I installed all new bulbs and tested the lamp harness to be sure the lights light up. I sure don't want to take things apart to fix it later.

I used 3M General Trim Adhesive for the wood grain. Had to tape everything off and spray it. When this stuff touches it is stuck for good. Had to be very careful but somehow I got it glued on. I just got lucky because that was beyond my normal abilities.

very nice..

Eric that sounded funny, "beyond my normal abilities" what you were in superman mode.
My wiring is just a mess, but that is a different project, I am worried that even if the wire looks good it will fail and cause a catastrophic event.

Love these kind of details your posting it will help me a lot later on.

Not getting to much done. Working alot of OT at work and selling stuff at home and then the Holiday things we are doing. At least I did order my Legendary interior parts today. They have a 25% off sale and cut shipping prices in half. Looks like my interior parts are way under budget. I just hope getting the covers installed and the headliner installed is under also.

I got the hood back. I can not get a good picture of the color. None of the pictures I have taken look like the color in person.

Like I said before, I don't know how close this matches the original color but I know it is much smoother than original. I think the clear is what is affecting the pictures so much. Correct or not, I am very happy with it. My only complaint is the lack of stripes. I think they are ugly without stripes. I do plan to add them someday but it will start its new life like it was made, as a stripe delete car.

Very nice, but if that's clear coat/base coat, I'm not sure stripes can be added later without the chance of them not adhering properly.

Costpenn and NDERISE got me inspired to try and get this car done for the nationals. Going to be tough for many reasons but most of all is the fact that I spent all my Oldsmobile money on my wifes Acadia. The van she was driving just wasn't going to last much longer and I refuse to get a car loan. I am guestimating that I need to raise around $6000 more to finish it and more for the trip. Talked to my wife and we think we can get it done and she is excited to leave the kids with my parents for a few days while we go to the Nationals. That is enough for her to be on board, lol.

This car will not be any competition compared to the cars I seen at this years nationals or others being built here on CO at this time. I am doing this car the best I can but I have never been into it for the judging and will likely be eaten alive in that department.

Only thing that I don't like about this is that I don't want to shortcut anything to try to make a deadline. I did that on my Rallye 350 and will NOT make the same mistake. First time I realize I am trying to shortcut something I will cut off this plan. With the Nationals 7 months away I don't see why we can't make it.

don't know about at your house but at mine if mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy. your wright eric take your time don't short cut anything theres always next year if not this year and hopefully it will be closer for us all

I hope you meet your goals and I'm confident that your W-Machine will do just fine as well as be a hit at any event.

Just remember, if you miss the Nationals there is always MCACN.
