NEED HELP identify this part

Hello Olds People,

last sunday I broke my shifter while on a cruise.
Now I investigated and found out that this little ring must be the cause.

Can anybody tell me how this part is named and maybe where I can get one?
Am I right that this is something like a clamp which just keeps the shifter in place?

hope you can help me out.

Greetings from Germany.

(sorry for the bad pictures)

From the picture I would say it is a snap ring type of retainer. You might try a hardware supplier online. I like McMaster Carr for odd hardware like this.
