How did you select your user name
As many of you know I reached a mile stone on Monday. For 30 years, I have wanted my own 455 built the way I wanted it, and I finally heard it run.
I was thinking about the passage of time and how long I have loved Oldsmobiles, which brought me back to a sobering thought. There is one person I cannot share this excitement with, my best friend in high school: Doug Morrow. Sadly Doug died in an accident before he was 25.
Doug and I were both into Oldsmobiles, worked on them together, raced each other all the time, scavaged the local junk yards in search of those special parts. It was Doug who labeled my first car, a 67 4-door Cutlass "Troy's Toy". He was also into woodworking and made a small wooden plaque that sat in my package tray displaying in the rear window. His car is the yellow Cutlass with the black top in my picture of the three Cutlasses
So here's to you Buddy.
Hence my user name.
So, I thought I would take the time to start a thread if anyone wants to share a memory or two, feel free.

Cool story Troy. It was great to meet you last year & glad to hear your car is coming together!
Some of the members on here have been to my house or warehouse & others have seen my selection of used parts at Homecoming or the nationals. That would explain how I got my screen name.

Thanks for appreciating part of my history. Like everyone lots of stories I could tell. Like the time we decided pouring gas on his parents garage floor, lighting it so we could do fire burn outs with our dirt bikes, who knew battery vapors were flammable? Or when I was swinging from an A frame trying to counter balance the 350 and th400 we had just taken out because somehow the A frame almost tipped over as we pushed the car out from under it. Or the fact that every new stereo, speakers, amplifiers we put in, and there were more than I could count, AC/DC -You Shook Me All Night Long had to be the first song that was played to "test sound quality"
Guess what song will be playing, when the 442 makes her maiden voyage out of the garage. 🙂
Also, keep those names coming.

Sorry about your friend, your story reminds me of a friend of mine and me with the things we did.
My name is from racing 3 and 4 wheelers in MX and later Freestyle. My AMA race number was 777 but I was allowed to shorten it to 77.

My "handle" came from my 64 Catalina 2+2 I owned for 13 yrs. 389 with dualquads & I got tagged with "dualquadpete" & in keeping with that , when I built my 51 Pontiac torpedo back { Cdn. Pontiac] 2 dr. 358 SBC I followed suit & put dual quads on that one!!! As for the Olds. Hmmm Maybe!!!!!!!!!

I use the same name on all the forums I'm on.
I also have a full custom 68 Cougar that I kind of named Local Hero because it is VERY WELL known around northeast Ohio. But when I'd take it to a national event such as GoodGuys, all it does is take up a parking space. The only people who give it a second look are other Cougar owners.
I took it from a Bruce Springsteen song from his days without the E Street Band. From either the Human Touch or Lucky Town albums which were both released on the same day back then.

My first Oldsmobile find was a 65 Delta 88 with factory 4 speed. As I was researching whether or not it was really a factory installed 4 speed, (had never seen one before), I ran across this site where I figured I could find answers. I was in such a hurry to get information and search CO I just typed in the first thing that came to mind thinking I could change it later...Hence, one of the dumbest user names ever, "lansing". Oh well, bought the car, found lots of good info here.......phhffffftt.....lansing.....what a goof I am! :-)

I had personal plates on my car,442 Harv. Before I even had a computer, and when I went to a car show, some guys said, here comes 442 Harv. So when I got a computer, years later, That seemed, like a good name.

A 1961 M37 got me back to the vehicle rebuild mode. Went through a rough time and when I got it back together bought the truck, rebuilt and re-powered it. Felt great to be able to use years of skill and knowledge and have the money to spend on it.
Used this handle on my first internet site, one dedicated to these vehicles and now defunct. Use this handle everywhere now on internet sites, but sold the truck afew years ago.

The first forum I joined was a Genesis board on Prodigy in the early 90's. I went for 'lurker' first (referencing Dodo/Lurker), but that was noted as a poor choice. Someone said 'oddball' was the band's code name for one of the songs I really liked at the time. And it's been a fitting name ever since.

Thank you for sharing. Sorry about your friend, but I admire that you've remembered him in this way.
The first Oldsmobile I rebuilt I had painted Ford Grabber Blue. I remember picking it up at the paint shop and thinking "what did I do?", but over time the bright blue color grew on me. It wasn't a 442, it was a 1971 Cutlass Supreme. But in the early 1980's most of the car guys I knew had no idea what a 442 was, so my Oldsmobile was called a 442 more often than not. It was my daily driver from the mid 1980's into mid 1990's. Here's a picture in the early 1990's when I had put close to 100,000 miles on it since the rebuild.

Some very fitting names here. I love to read about the reference to a past vehicle or friend as a user name. It reminds us of our past and keeps those memories alive. I chose a user name to remind me of my future. It reminds me every day that I need to set a good example for my son. There are too many young men being raised without a father and don't grow up learning how to be a man.

I use "Der Bugmeister" in VW forums but didn't think it made sense to carry over into the Olds world, so VI for the island I live on and Cutty because I didn't know better at the time!

Sorry for your loss. It's really cool that you are keeping the memory alive.
I bought my car in 1981.I first went through the 350 with cam/headers - typical build but by 1983 I had a 455 built under the hood. It pulled hard and chugged fuel. My best friend from childhood called the car chugger on one of our summer trips while at a gas station. The name stuck :-)
