***UPDATE***8/13/23 - I Found my SX!!!

I owned this 1970 Cutlass Supreme from 2000-2015. It has a good deal of sentimental value to me, and this is the main reason I wanted so badly to reacquire it. I used to take my boys to cruise nights and car shows in this car when they were 3,4 5 years old. I also drove this car from San Francisco to Seattle with my oldest son in 2005, when he was 19 years old.. A fantastic trip and some great father/son bonding on that trip. Some of you may have seen the picture I took of this car nosed up against the (at that time) GM owned Sebring Yellow '70 Cutlass Supreme SX at the Seattle show.

After tracking it for almost 2 years, I was finally able to locate it in Canton, Ohio.
I flew from Dallas to Akron over 4th of July weekend to see it. It was love at first sight - again!!

We worked out a deal and I drove it away. It had less than 100 miles on a fresh rebuilt motor, so I didn't want to risk driving it all the way back to Dallas. So, I drove it to my sister's house in Chicago, parked it and flew home. I started working with Richard to ship the car home to me. After not seeing it for 8 years, I got to see it for 24 hours and drove it 400 miles. Then I had to wait another month to get it home to Texas! Last week, Richard was able to pick it up and bring it back home to me. Sweet 70 SX I had the pleasure of taking care of recently - ClassicOldsmobile.com

Richard was fantastic to work with. An Oldsmobile guy, a car guy, and a really nice trailer setup. His price was very reasonable, especially considering I didn't have to work with a middleman, and I got the personal care and consideration from him for me and my car.
(gearhead78, Hot Rod Haven).

I'm now crawling all over this car and so far, aside from the engine being rebuilt, the car still appears to be in really nice condition. The paint job is over 25 years old, the car still wears 100% of its original body panels, and the interior is still very nice and original, with only the carpeting, driver's seat cover, both seat backs and both arm rest backing plates having been replaced.

The car was equipped from the factory as follows:
- Special Order Sebring Yellow, White vinyl top and Ivory interior.
- Y-79 SX Performance package: L33 455, 2bbl, th400, 2.56 anti-spin rear end - all original, number matching driveline
- Sport mirrors, cut-out rear bumper, 14" wheels w/hubcaps
- PS, PDB, A/C, rear defogger
- Bucket seats, standard console with floor shift
- pwr windows, locks, trunk, driver's seat
- tilt wheel, standard steering wheel
- interior courtesy light package
- outside window bright trim

The following are options I added to it during my previous ownership: (all correct 1970 Cutlass options)
- SS1 wheels
- FE2 performance suspension (rear anti-sway bar with boxed lower control arms)
- W27 aluminum differential cover
- Sport Steering Wheel
- Rallye Pack
- Speed Sentinel Speedometer
- am/fm stereo
- 8-track player
- under dash tissue dispenser
- hood lock
- nightwatch (not hooked up)

For now I am just so happy to have it back. I plan for this car to remain in my family after I'm gone. I have 4 kids, and plenty of grandkids, hopefully someday one of them will enjoy this car as much as I have.

I bought my SX on Easter Sunday from my oldest brother. That car had Zero looks. Alpine green faded. White top. Ugly. Inside. Standard shifter. Buckets. Console. 2.56 Posi rear?? That car dropped second gear at 85mph. I smoked so many people in the highway.

Good for you getting your car back. Mine will get back to me too.

Congrats on finding your car. Great detective work!

I'd love to get my 1969 BOSS 302 back that's been gone since the mid 90's?? I did some detective work but the fact that I had it logged on the BOSS 302 registry and the current owner did register it too helped. It's still being shown around Palmer, Alaska and still looks decent after all these years. He doesn't respond to my emails or voice messages, so I think he's happy in his world. If the car were for sale, I could afford it but being retired, I'll just be happy with my two 70's rides.

Once again, congrats! And enjoy!

I would love to know the backstory of that car. Especially if those are factory colors. Looks like a special order car hardcore.

Lol! Those seat covers are genuine lambs wool. I had them laying around and put them on when I first got the car to protect the white seats. They're long gone now.

I worked with the ERTL company in 2003-05 as a consultant on their build of the "American Muscle" collection 1970 Cutlass Supreme SX in 1/18 scale.
My Yellow Cutlass SX was used by them as the 1/1 model for the 1st release of this build in January 2005. This first release is an EXACT replica of my car, right down to all the interior options!
The 2nd release used the ram-air set up from my (former) 1970 Cutlass Pace car to add the W25 hood and air cleaner, and also used the SSII wheels. This car was in Special Order Rallye Red.

How cool is that?? Cool story on your SX. What a unique car. I swear my next Oldsmobile I want a 70 Supreme.
PS: I would go buy new sheep skin covers. They are so worth it.

When I was a kid there was a rally red SX near a high school that lived close to. (Hinkley High School for you Denver people.) White top and interior. Not one straight panel on that car. Including front and rear bumpers. I have never seen a factory loaded car like that one. Damn near every option except a W-25 hood. I don't know if you could order a W-25 hood on an SX. Absolutely Loaded. Power windows and locks. Rear window defog. AM/FM eight track. Power bucket's both sides. Gauges. Tilt. Sport wheel. Dual Gate. Sport mirrors. Obviously a posi part of the SX option. Cruise control. AC. I always wonder if that car ever got saved.

Yes, I'm fine. I was referring to sometime way off in the future when I'm gone. I'm 62 and pretty healthy (except for my knees, my back, my wrist, my eyes, my hearing, etc...). Thanks for checking, though.

Most SX cars I’ve encountered had open differentials and tall gears. Two barrel carburetor was standard too.

Funny. I have never seen a factory SX car with an open rear. Mine had a 2.56 posi. I thought that was factory on all SX's like part of the SX option. No??

No, the Y-79 Cutlass Supreme SX Performance Package option did not include a posi rear end.
You can find a great deal of information about these cars on www.sx455.com Specs, articles, factory documents, members cars, etc.

Initially, the SX included the L33 455 2bbl, th400 AT and a 2.56 open rear end. Things changed a little bit during the later part of the 1970 model year with the L33 2bbl being replaced by the L31 4bbl as well as the introduction of the W-32 version of the 455 4bbl. The posi rear was available throughout the SX offering with many different axle ratios, including the 2.56 (code R3). Interestingly, in 1970 only, the SX was also available with the real W27 rear end (3.23 = SV, 3.42 = SX) but only with the W32 version.

I've had quite a few SX cars over the years, some with posi, some not. My understanding is that the SX was essentially the successor to the earlier "Turnpike Cruiser" option (400 2bbl, AT, tall gears). It was intended as a highway car, not a race car.
