engine squeal

engine squeal
In the last week or two, I have started this engine a couple dozen times or so. (Broke in and dynoed last year)
Last night I added some more transmission fluid and ran it through the gears and it seemed fine.
Today I wanted to actually have the car move under its own power.
I fired up the engine only to hear a loud squeal.
Ok Probably got antifreeze on one of the belts.
Proceeded to tighten all the belts and still loud squeal.
Loosened all the belts... and hmm still loud squeal.
The power steering pump seemed like it could spin more freely.
Almost had it out and retested it seemed fine.
So put everything back together tightened the belts and.... squeal
I removed all the belts and fired the engine for 5-10 seconds and still squeal..... I checked for oil pressure.
Do I have big trouble?
spun bearing?
transmission?
what else can make such a squeal when no belts are attached?
I am very concerned and confused.
What's the best approach to troubleshoot this?

Weird I just put the belts back.
Fired it up it squealed for a few seconds then stopped.
Seemed fine shut it down and started again quick squeal then ok.
Seemed like a scrapping noise.
I think maybe torque converter to the flexplate may have loosened up.

Did you say the PS pump seemed tight? I might go with that. I once had a PS pump making a noise like that and I didn't figure it out until it was nearly seized, I mean to the extent that the engine was overheating from the extra drag.

I was fairly convinced it was the PS pump until I removed all the belts and it still squealed/Scraped

Did you put a double row timing chain in it? I remember I had some issue when I put one in- had to apace out or shim pump or?? Really can't remember. I wonder if it hits at times if that is it??? I hope that isn't it....

Had some time to troubleshoot the squeal.
Fired it up and I got the squeal again a few times and almost threw my hands up and thought I might have to check the timing chain.
I took a look at the clearance of the flexplate to the starter gear and noticed it was pretty close.
Tried once more and actually saw the problem. The starter gear was intermittently hitting the flex plate.
I am wondering if the recent drop in temp is enough to shrink the tolerance.
Now I am a little confused about shimming the starter doesn't that change the tooth depth as opposed to the distance from flexplate?
At least it's not an engine problem.

The shim arrived today so I dropped the starter and hmm it already had a shim installed.
It says not to use more than 1 shim.
I did notice 1 of the hex screws was loose since it did not squeal for the first 2 dozen starts I am thinking that's the problem.
I guess if the loose screw allows the starter to pivot it won't take much to hit the flywheel.
I think they have a .08 shim vs standard .062.

Spoke with Powermaster support and they said I could use two shims if need be.
Figured I'd try with one shim properly tightened, inch lb torque wrench showed up today so I gave it a shot, and ng it still squealed.
Installed the second shim and seems to be good now. Only started it once or twice. since the second Shim went in.
