torsion bar install

anybody have experience in installing a trunk lid torsion bar on a 67 olds 442, it seems you would have to twist the bar pretty far to latch it in place, any ideas would be great, tired of using shower curtain rod to hold trunk lid up

Have done this, not fun and I struggle thru each time. Small pipe wrench with small extension on handle will let you twist the rod. A helper can assist pulling out on the spring bar to shorten it a bit so you can get the end in where it belongs. I work at the end that has three slots for tension adjustment.

Olds had a special tool that is easily duplicated, makes the job easy. Notch the end of a piece of pipe so it fits over the torsion bar; drill across the side and put a carriage bolt through the hole to hook onto the bent end of the torsion bar.
