I installed this clock (car did not come with one but the plug was there) Oct 1, 1994. It was quartz converted and after 19 years it still works. One thing great about the conversion, they use ALOT less battery so they are not prone to run your battery down during extended storage

Tucked in the corner is one of my add on options, a wastepaper basket, very cool to have and extremely hard to find. I've become adept at bank shots while driving.

I believe this is a period correct license plate I bought NOS for the 2003 Nationals and never took it off. All told, Olds sold nearly half a million Cutlass' including over 43,000 of this Calais model. Those grills were NOS when the car was repainted. I taped the holes myself so the (plastic) chrome wouldn't be sprayed over. Took me several hours.

Showing off those 70's style whitewalls! All the stainless steel molding trim and wheel well trim was NOS when installed in 2002 when the car was painted by Manchester Motor Car in CT. At the time they said this was the newest car they took on as a job to paint.

The Landau vinyl roof was replaced in 1999, as the car is not outdoors that much it still looks new. The script and badge were NOS when installed. In the window you can see most of the municipal sticker from Tenafly, NJ where the original owner of this Calais lived.

My Calais has the same interior pattern as the Hurst Olds, Camel Tan Lochland Velour, which has not been available since 1989. These front seats are from a donor car. I hear rumours that later this year someone is going to repop this pattern. We'll see......

As much as I'd like to have a 350 in there, this 260 runs so well it's in there to stay. I've put about 70,000 miles on it since the rebuild in 1992. I am running Jacobs 8.5mm wires with a Jacobs cap, rotor, coil, and platinum tip plugs. It makes a big difference on how smooth the car runs. Note the red painted handle for the 200R4's dipstick

Somewhere under there is an Olds 260. Rebuilt in 1992, it's not the original block. That one had to be tossed as after 145,000 it was so badly scored it couldn't be rebuilt. It's bored .30 over and with that Hurst style exhaust I'm thinking I have about 115-120 hp now, as opposed to the factory 105 hp. Great for those times when I'm going uphill doing 65 in 90 degree weather with the A/C on.

Just out of site are those dual exhaust outlets, aka 1979 Hurst Olds exhaust, 1 in, 2 out. . Sure to add another 5 horses to my 105 HP motor! I'm still waiting to feel the difference. Also, that's not a scratch on the trunk lid, just a plane gone by overhead. The tail light lenses were NOS when recently installed as is evidenced by the silvering around the edges.

Yes indeed that is a 4 speed shifter & plate you see there. I picked up a rebuilt 3:08 Posi rear in 2002 to replace my original 2:29 that had almost 200,000 miles on it. My 260 motor and M200 trans weren't too thrilled with running 3000 RPMs at 65 mph. In fact the M200 blew up at the 2003 Nationals and the car was U-Hauled home. So, I picked up a 200R4 and I got my 1900 rpms at 65 mph back (and my 21 mpg as well!) Great trans for running 3rd around town, and then hitting the O/D on the highway.

The Goodyear ST's were replaced with these 1 inch whitewalls from American Classics a few years ago. I decided to go back to the traditional look. These tires ride as nice as they look, it was worth the expense to get them, and the 1" as opposed to the 3/4 really takes it back to day 1.

This car originally came with the AM/FM stereo. It's had quite a lot of different radios over the last 29 years I've had it, but I've settled on a correct AM/FM Stereo Cassette. I also added on one of those Delco CB units I found NOS a while back. And, I just acquired one of those period correct Delco Equalizers NOS for the car.

This car was painted 10 years ago, time flies. Most of what you see on the front clip is NOS with the exception of the headlights, they are halogen as I drive this car a lot. This front bumper was NOS too, at the time. Very hard to find as this front bumper's style was only made in 1979. The rear bumper was made all the same for 78, 79, 80 though.

The red Calais hood ornament and red front header panel emblem make themselves available NOS from time to time. The ones used for the 79 Hurst Olds are identical in style, and were the same color as the 1978 Calais, which was black. These price NOS for 2 to 3 times as much as the red ones.

1972 Cutlass Supreme. Here's one car I really miss. This had the 442 FE-2 suspension package and it rode fantastic. The only reason I sold it was I got a great deal on a 1972 Cutlass S that was restored. So while this car was nice, the one I bought was nicer and I couldn't keep both.

1979 Hurst Olds Promo Photo. This was actually my car back when Hurst owned it between 1979-1981. The giveaway is you can see the cutout portion of the gold anodized hatches on the roof. Does anyone agree with me when I say I think my car seems to be smiling here? Looks quite happy indeed. Ah, youth.

1979 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. Sad to day I didn't give this car much of a chance. I put a rebuilt Jasper 6 cylinder motor in it to replace the bad V-6 that was in it, but I was appalled at the sheer lack of power that motor had. It was even more anemic than the 260 V-8. It had that nice pillow-like interior which cleaned up really well. Even though I jazzed it up a bit with a sport steering wheel and a set of N-88 wheels (Hurst style but silver instead of gold), I couldn't overcome the dog motor and didn't want to go thru the expense of converting it to an 8. Off it went.

1994 Cutlass Supreme SL Convertible. What a disappointment this car was. I got it with 40,000 miles (maybe) and the original top that leaked in 5 places. I spent $1,600 on the canvas top you see in the picture, and when I got it back it leaked in the one spot that wasn't previously leaking. The timing belt snapped on it, fortunately I was going only 5 mph or I could have had a really huge motor problem. So it had to go. I always wanted one of these until I got one. Good riddance. Never again. Until next time.

1991 Cutlass Calais International Series. Man, do I miss this car. It was fast, it was great on gas. But it leaked so it had to go. I never had a car that leaked so bad I could have stored goldfish on the rear seat floor after driving home in the rain.

But, if anyone knows where I can find a black one, I'd sure like another chance at one of these!

The old racetrack at Pownal, VT. The original drivetrain in this car is long gone. While I now have another rebuilt (in 1992) 260 motor in it, the Calais now has a 3:08 posi in it. I found out the hard way the 260 wasn't too happy with that, so I installed a 200R4 transmission. Great for getting my 21 to 22 mpg on the highway back.

Hemmings Gas station, Bennington VT. A "must take" photo if you are in that area. I moved quickly on this one, someone might need air at any time.

Hershey 9/24/2006. I no longer have these Goodyear ST's on this car. I went back to 1 inch whitewalls from American Classics. Those ST's were not good handling tires so off they came.

Noble & Cooley Drum Factory in MA. Every year at the peak fall season we'd make it a point to photo one of our cars there. Tough to do now, though. The building on the right has now been converted to a museum so it's a lot more crowded than it used to be.

Back in the 80's I used to work at this cemetery and kept my lawn mowers in the shed the one in this photo replaced. My trunk lid is still bowed a bit from the damage it sustained from having those mowers in the trunk when I transported them to my lawns. Couldn't afford a truck in those days.

Surrey Lane in Tenafly, NJ., where I used my Calais as a work car for my lawn cutting business during college. I had 21 lawns on this block at one time. Park the car once, get 'em done. Low overhead, less wear and tear on the car. Looking back I never should have used the car for that task in the first place!

Local Tobacco Field, excellent background shot. The 1979 Hurst Olds was built out of this model, and my car has the same interior that's found in the 79 H/O: camel tan lochland velour. This pattern has not been available since 1989 and is extremely hard to find. You'd probably need to find a donor car which in itself is not easy.

Correct Carb for 1979 Hurst Motor, ready to go. I believe they may have also put these carbs on the Olds equipped 403 1979 Trans Am Firebirds, not sure. Could be why Brian beat that 79 Trans Am back in 1982, it probably had the inferior 400 Pontiac motor in it.

Gold Anodized Hurst Hatches. Only 4 sets of these gold anodized sets were made, 2 were to go to white & gold cars, and 2 went to the black & gold version. What you see here is the NOS set installed on the restored car. This set was to have gone to Linda Vaughn for her 79 H/O back then, but she did not take delivery so they were never installed, until now. The original set for this car is in storage. The whereabouts of the 2 black & gold cars is unknown, they may no longer exist. My H/O may just be the only car left with these gold anodized hatches.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of either of the 2 black and gold 1979 H/O's with those gold anodized Hurst Hatches on the cars, please contact me or someone in the H/OCA club, there are ALOT of people who would like to know if they still exist as they are part of a very important part of Hurst Olds and Oldsmobile history!

All 3 "civilian" owners Mark (1989-1996), Gene (1996-present owner), Brian (1981-1989). Hurst Performance owned this car from 1979 to 1981 (primarily driven by Jack Duffy) and was used as their promo vehicle those 2 years. Note I moved over to show the H/O license plate, that one is original to the car.

1979 Hurst Hatch Ad. In my view they should have left the passengers side hatch on the car to display it. I do this all the time at shows so people can see what they look like off and on the car. Also, note the wheels on this Oldsmobile, these were the silver painted version which could be purchased with any Cutlass Supreme/Calais between 1978 to 1981. These Hatches were available in aluminum, the gold anodized versions were not available
