This Cutlass Supreme convertible was ordered by my husband from GM in the spring of 1970 when we were first dating. It was our family car. After we moved to our horse farm, necessitating other types of vehicles, the Cutlass was relegated to the back of the barn for over thirty years. After my husbands death from cancer, I thought it would be a good project for me to restore the old Olds. I decided to keep the car period correct so not much is different from the order form. However, I did have power added to the brakes and changed to a dual gate, his/her Hurst shifter which is more unique to the period. With the help of Jasper Engines and Nicks Auto of Anderson, IN, the Cutlass remains numbers matching. The 350 HC Rocket V8 has a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust with Flowmaster low rumble.
As to the body, only the rear quarter panels had to be replaced; the rest is the original sheet metal. While the exterior pieces of pot metal, like the badges, are new, all the stainless is original as well. The new paint in burnished gold is the original color. 1970 was the
only year for this color and for the chrome strip down the center of the hood. I found all the original paperwork, owners manual, Protect-O-Plate, etc., and enjoyed completing a photo album of my Cutlasss restoration process.
In the early years of our marriage, my husband and I put a little over 55,800 miles on the car. Since having the restoration completed, my friends and I have enjoyed almost 3,500 milesand most of those with the top down, of course. As I like to say, The Cutlass is big, pretty, so much fun, and loud. Whats not to love! Read more »
