No more aftermarket SSIII's

Well not quite, there are the crappy Wheel Vintique's versions but the quality ones from Specialty Wheel have been discontinued.

When I called SW today to inquire about their 15x8 SSIII's, they told me they've been discontinued and 'very popular'. I asked him why they would discontinue them if they were so popular and he said 'because we have the SSI's'. That's like saying you can't get beef anymore because there's chicken. Makes no sense to me but there you have it.

Doesn't sound like a good business plan to me.

Let me translate:

"Because we have the SSIs" means "Because we sell a bazillion Magnum 500 style wheels to the Chevelle guys, so our profits per wheel are MUCH higher than on the comparatively low-volume Olds-only wheels".

Specialty Wheel took a giant step backwards once they moved locations. They used to do "custom backspacing" for a small up-charge, now they don't offer it at any cost. I had them make a pair of 15 x 8.5" SSI's with 5.5" Back Spacing for a 1965 Olds Cutlass. That size would allow a 275/60/15 Goodyear Eagle GT II tire to tuck into the wheel house and not rub. When I called to order another set for my current 65 Cutlass project, they said thet don't do that work any more.

I think you're referring to the Bonspeed Icon wheels.

Are snap on caps an indicator of SSIII's? If so I have a set of four. I'm guessing they are 15x7 though.

The bonspeed icon wheels in that link are SSI style.

SSII and SSIII wheels were both available from the factory with snap on caps or bolt on caps and in 14's or 15's. The only difference was color. SSII wheels were dark argent grey and SSIII wheels were lower body color.
