Spent a good bit of time digging through the forums, and its pretty much just somewhat talked me out of being 100% sold on the Cragar idea.
As far as tires, I was as much meat out back as I can, white letters are a must. For the fronts, I'd like as wide as I can without rubbing. Stock 442 suspension, and front discs to boot..what size should I be looking for? I'd like a decent rake if possible.
As far as wheels go...Id like something appropriate for the period. I've always liked the TorqThrusts but Cragars seem to look good on these IMO. If there are any other options that'd look good, I'm open to seeing them.
What are your recommendations? Bonus points for pictures.
Here is mine so it'll help everyone visualize what they'll be going on..
I like the look of the exclusively Oldsmobile SSII/SSIII. You can usually find the snap on cap versions in 15 for a decent price. As far as tire’s I’m leaning towards Cooper Cobra when I replace mine. They don’t have the issue with the RWL’s turning brown like BFG does. I run 245/60/15 in the front with no rubbing in my 70. I think anything bigger then that would probably rub. Rears can be much wider but I run the 245’s on all four corners.
Not that it matters but those SSII's aren't original to the car. The '69 SSII's were 14x6 and painted a dull grey color. In my opinion, 14" wheels are too small on these cars, especially when outfitted with modern radial tires (shorter sidewalls). I upgraded my '69 442 from the SSII's to 15x7 SSI reproductions from Wheel Vintiques. In my opinion, these look better than traditional mags but to each his own. Hopefully you've already gone through all of the pictures on the wheel/tire size thread on the forum. Lots of pictures and good reference info there.
I'm running 245/60's on all four corners and I think they look good. I couldn't go too much larger on the front without rubbing. The rear could handle quite a bit more but, being a convertible, I'm not looking for a rake or 'fat and skinny' look that might work for a coupe. 275/60's are fairly common on the rear of these cars. Some guys say they're running 295's but that seems like you'd get some rubbing. All of this is for 15".
If you get a higher rear tire than stock your speedometer will be off. Plenty of other posts talk about how wide a tire you can fit in the back. You could do 70s in front 60s in back, or 60s in front 50s in the back,
