Tire dimensional information

I found this table on the web. This is great info on the dimensions of older OEM tires. I'm making it a sticky.

That's cool, Joe. I've got a few charts that compare "old" and "new" sizes, but none that run through the "inch number" sizes this way.

Thanks,

- Eric

Good question. It's apparently a made-up measurement that is the sum of the section width and O.D. I guess this is just a way to characterize wider vs. narrower tires of the same diameter. Here's a definition from the NHTSA:

E. SIZE FACTOR DETERMINATION
The actual size factor, which is the sum of the average tire section width and the outer diameter, is computed by the testing laboratory. The result is recorded on the test report in the space provided. The actual size is required to be equal to or greater than the preprinted minimum size factor.

There are a lot of those "equivalency" charts on the web, but I find that I don't always agree with their selections. That's why I prefer to get actual dimensions and pick the tires myself.

The ones I have show nominal dimensions, rather than equivalences, but actual dimensions are apparently subject to the whims of the gods.

This one is my favorite, though I do not recall where I got it originally:

Of course, tires are flexible and dimensions depend on rim width and inflation pressure.

Good find, Joe. The Tire and Rim Association is quite aggressive in keeping their pages off the internet.
