I need help with new tires


I want to put this stance on my car, what tires do I need to get, I want redlines, I will post the link to them after the pic of my car. Please any info would help, thank you.

The car in the top picture has either air shocks or station wagon springs installed in the rear. The front looks to be at stock height. The tire size in the rear is either 295-50-15 or the no longer available 305-50-15 on 15x10 Cragar SS wheels. The fronts I have no clue, they could be either 60 or 70 series tires.

I agree with Oldcutlass, I think Eric nailed it with air shocks and/or wagon coils, 15x10 50's on the rear and 15x7 or 8's with 60 or 70's series tires up front.
Old school look for sure, handling would be treacherous on tight bends and corners at certain speeds.
Bumpy ride for anyone in the back seat with it sitting up high.
I like the look myself.

Gotta ask

is it the wide tire you like or the jacked up rear end. A lot of tire should fit in the rear wells and make a big difference to the look but if you want the jacked up look, shackles and or air shocks will do that. As mentioned and from my experience up in the rear means bad handling, more stress on the front suspension. When I wanted that though I did not care about the down side and enjoyed the look.

Those rear wheels in the first pic may even be low-offset 15x8, judging by the amount of sidewall bulge on the tires. I do agree those rear tires are probably 295/50/15. I believe you can get that size in BFG and Cooper.

If you plan on using the stock wheels you have posted in your 2nd pic, DO NOT mount a 295/50/15 tire on them.

The jacked-up, tires-sticking-out-of-the-fenders look came and went with the mullet. I wouldn't go there.

You are wrong with this statement!! The Day 2 thing is picking up strong.

If you have 15" rims, I can set you up with L60-15 Polyglas RWL in back (equal to 275/60/15) with F60-15 (equal to a 235/60/15) up front. This gives you about a 2 " rake and give you the stance shown in the top picture.

As for help with the rear, stay away from air shocks and go with spring spacers. If the wheels are proper backspacing, that wheel/ tire package won't hang out too far, but you want to do your measurements.

As for redstripe, you are going to be limited on going with wider tires, but if you go to Diamondback, they can custom make redstripe radials in the sizes you want.

Nick is right, those are definitely 295/50's on an 8" wheel. Same combo I had on my car before the new wheels. 8" was the minimum width for that tire.

Agree that the look is dated.

The "Day 2" thing is another BS term made up by the high dollar auction houses to justify an excessive price for a car that isn't correct. You can build a car any way you want. The jacked up look with tires sticking way out from the fenders died for a reason. It looks like Joe Dirt and screws up handling. We all did crap like this when we were young and stupid. Some of us wised up.

While my tires don't stick way out of the wheel wells, I like the lifted look. Although mine is lifted front and back.

I like the raked 15x10 wheel with 295/50 tire look.
No.... I LOVE that look.
I know it's the worse thing for handling, but I'm not out for anything other than Friday/Saturday cruise nights and car shows anyways.

I'm going to do the same to mine, I just don't know if I want to custom order a 5" backspace on the wheels.
When I can get the car out of it's winter slumber, I'll be able to get to work on figuring the wheel dimensions and how to best achieve the lifted rear.
It definitely won't be air shocks. LOL

Im doing the same look with my 71, I love the raked look. I have all the parts numbers for the shocks and rear springs I used also. Just went through Moogs site and found a spring that matched my specs and my desired height.

I like the look as well, looks to be sitting up nice. I put vista wagon coils in the rear of my 76. Pushed it up a good 4". You car is going to look great after paint. Like the rims and Goodyears. How new are your Goodyear tires, I couldn't find RWL when I looked at Goodyear tires 2 years ago. I just went with the reliable BFG's.
I'm getting tired of the BFG'S time for a new tire look on my 76.

The rims and tires are atleast 10 years old and quite dry and cracked now so after the restoration I'll definitely be going with new tires and probably rims. Might look at going to 17 inch rims just for more variety in tire options.

You might look at 18" wheels for even more tire options. I always felt the 17" rims were still a little "off" on our cars. 18"s seem to fill the wheel well better while giving you a great fitting tire too. If your budget allows, a nice set of 18's with the right tire will completely change the look of your car.

Wheel diameter is irrelevant. Start by looking at lists of available TIRE sizes and diameters. Pick the TIRE you want, THEN pick the wheel size. Most 17" tires on the market are very low profile and too small for an A-body (or, they are truck tires).

Good point about picking tires first. Still not sure how 17s or 18s would look versus 15s since I'm going for the 80s hot rod look. Some classic style 15s might be the best fitting for the look.
