How flush to rim do beauty rings go?

I've mounted new tires and are putting wheels back together. I have the beauty rings that don't clip the edge where the weights go, but have the fingers that dig into the paint a little further in. They are as down as I can push them, but there is a little gap between their bottom edge and the wheel edge. I suppose I should tap them further in with a hammer and 2x4 buck.

Picture taken for other reasons, I can get an end on picture tomorrow.

Flush with the outer edge. I used to use a rubber mallet and tap them around the edge until they stop going in.

As said above, that’s how they are with a slight gap at the bottom. Ensure the upper lip is flush and it’s installed correctly.

I smacked them with a buck and hammer and got them a little tighter. Certainly "on there." Thanks.

Hey guys, How is the term buck being used in this thread? Is it something to spread out the force of the hammer blow?

That's what I meant, but I think I am wrong, come to think of it. A buck, in sheetmetal work, is what is under the work and you beat against it to form it. But, yes, I used a 2x4 and hit it with the hammer.

Thanks, Koda. Hadn't heard that term in this context before.

I usually just stand on the trim ring to press it on. My shoes are soft enough that they don't deform the ring.
